Chotiměř: Cultural History and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Chotiměř
Chotiměř lies in the valley of the Zubřina stream. Two distinct themes can help you plan your trip: the town’s history and cultural monuments, and the signposted Friendship Cycle Route No. 2141, which runs through the town. This places Chotiměř in the context of both its historical heritage and its connection to a longer cycling route.
Local History and Former Fortified Manor
Chotiměř was first mentioned in 1379. At that time, Hněvek z Chotoměře owned the town. In 1547, the original fortified manor was recorded as abandoned. It stood on an island in the village pond. The two dates refer to different periods in the town’s history: the 1379 mention concerns the town, while the 1547 account describes the condition of the fortified manor at that time. Anyone interested in the historical development of the town will find specific chronological reference points here rather than merely general tradition.
The Castle Chapel and Other Monuments
The Castle Chapel of St John of Nepomuk is listed as an immovable cultural monument in the Czech heritage register under number 22488/4-2035. Its articulated trapezoidal floor plan and three sheet-metal domes are features of its documented architectural description. The niches on the front of the façade contain statues of St Francis, St Joseph and St Catherine. The chapel’s religious character is reflected both in its architectural form and in its figurative decoration.
Chotiměř’s protected cultural heritage also includes the statue of St John of Nepomuk, monument number 16455/4-2037, and the Calvary sculptural group, number 24976/4-2036. The separate listings help distinguish the individual historical features: the chapel, the statue and the sculptural group are each distinct monuments.
The U Kalvárie Archaeological Site
The area’s earlier history is also evidenced by an archaeological site. U Kalvárie is located in fields east of the village, above the confluence of the Zubřina and Hradišťský potok streams. Surface finds revealed an extensive prehistoric settlement there. The area’s history therefore reaches further back than the written mention of Chotiměř in 1379. For trip-planning purposes, this archaeological context should be distinguished from the cultural monuments in the town: it describes a find site and its location, not a designated visitor attraction.
The Friendship Cycle Route Through Chotiměř
A tourism description updated in 2022 lists the signposted Friendship Cycle Route No. 2141 as passing through Chotiměř. It describes the route as a 105-kilometre cross-border connection from the tourist centre of the Upper Palatinate Forest in the district of Schwandorf, in the town centre of Nabburg, to the Regional Information Centre in Horšovský Týn. The section through Chotiměř is therefore part of a route whose stated endpoints extend well beyond the town.
For the Czech section, the description mentions field and forest tracks as well as minor roads with little traffic. These details provide an overview of the types of route in the Czech part, without attributing each individual surface to the section in Chotiměř.
