Accommodation in Dešenice
Dešenice offers two concrete themes to consider when planning a stay: historic architecture and brewing history, as well as trails in the Šumava landscape. The parish Church of St. Nicholas, Tvrz Dešenice and the museum provide clear cultural reference points; the nature reserve, cycling routes and a nature trail offer further ways to explore the outdoors. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you would like to focus your stay on architectural history, brewing culture or trails through the landscape.
Architectural history and brewing culture
The parish Church of St. Nicholas in Dešenice dates from the mid-14th century. The complex includes the church, tombstones, an enclosing wall, a Baroque gate and a mortuary. The combination of the 14th-century church building and the Baroque gate makes different historical layers visible within the same complex. Those interested in architectural history can view the church and its associated structures as a unified ensemble.
Tvrz Dešenice also tells the story of several building phases. In the mid-18th century, it underwent extensive restoration in the Baroque style without losing its Renaissance character. The combination of the two periods offers a distinctive way to explore the town’s architectural history: the Baroque renovation did not replace its Renaissance character. The Muzeum šumavského pivovarnictví Dešenice is housed in the historic Tvrz, also known as the castle. It offers insights into the history of brewing in the Šumava region. A brewery was later established in the Tvrz. The museum also includes a reconstructed historic taproom. Opening arrangements may change, and access to the taproom may be subject to visitor regulations. Check the current conditions before your visit.
Kámen doteku and a cross-border project
Another cultural point of interest is Kámen doteku: the smoothly polished stone invites visitors to touch it. In Dešenice, it is located to the left of the entrance to the Tvrz, next to the statue of St. John of Nepomuk in the fortress wall. These two reference points help you locate the stone without confusing it with the museum or the other structures of the Tvrz.
As a municipality, Dešenice participates in the cross-border Kámen doteku project. It is one of six Czech municipalities involved alongside the Bavarian municipalities of Eschlkam, Lam, Neukirchen b.Hl.Blut, Arrach and Lohberg. The other Czech municipalities are Chudenín, Hamry, Nýrsko, Strážov and Všeruby. The local stone is therefore part of a broader cultural context, while its precise location in Dešenice provides a specific point of interest.
Routes through the Šumava landscape
Outdoor trails are another consideration when planning your trip. Routes from Dešenice lead to the Městišťská rokle Nature Reserve. Cycling routes pass through deep Šumava forests with beautiful viewpoints.
The Po stopách formanů nature trail offers another specific option for an excursion: it starts at Dešenice railway station and returns there as a circular route. Information boards are provided at seven stops. The boards give the trail its educational structure, while the circular route returns to the same starting point. As local trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.
