Hošťka combines a distinctive linear village with church history and Cycle Route 36. If you are looking for a hotel in Hošťka, consider the purpose of your trip: should the village appeal to you mainly for its historic settlement layout, its church, or as a stop on a long-distance cycling route? The local features provide specific points of reference.

Village Square and Settlement Layout

The almost 800-metre-long village square is laid out as a linear village. Continuous rows of former agricultural farmsteads line both sides of the square, which is also characterised by several ponds. The Church of St Margaret dominates the village. This means the view takes in not just a single building, but a long, connected landscape of the square, ponds and former farmsteads. Anyone interested in historic village layouts will find a tangible example of Hošťka’s settlement form here.

Church and Services

The Church of St Margaret is single-naved and has a rectangular floor plan. The presbytery has a polygonal exterior and an almost semicircular interior. Inside, the church preserves original furnishings by the woodcarver Artschlag. Services are held every Sunday at 11 am throughout the year. If you wish to plan around a service, check the time before your trip, as service times may change.

Local History Between Border and Craftsmanship

Hošťka was first mentioned in 1482 under the name Hosskowo and was one of the most populous places in the Přimda Chods region. In the mid-16th century, residents guarded a section of the border as far as Vranči Pond; an imperial customs post operated in the village until 1613. In 1621, fierce fighting took place in the immediate vicinity between imperial and Swedish troops. In a major fire in 1887, a total of 55 farmsteads burned down. In 1930, residents made their living not only from agriculture but also from woodturning and mother-of-pearl processing. Alongside the church’s architectural form, these milestones give the village’s history a connection to the border and everyday life.

Cycle Route 36 and the Landscape

Cycle Route 36 runs through Hošťka on its 287-kilometre route from Všeruby to Měděnec and is regarded as the main long-distance cycle route through Český les. The 287 kilometres refer to the entire route between its two endpoints; Hošťka lies along the way. If you are planning a ride, check the current route in advance, as route alignments may change.

Part of the municipality of Hošťka lies within the Český les Protected Landscape Area. In the landscape of Český les, extensive forests form part of a varied mosaic of pastures, meadows and fallow land reverting to scrub. Hošťka also lies in an area with a forestry, agricultural and recreational character. If you want to take in the landscape as well as the historic village, this regional context offers another perspective.
