Kamenec is especially suited to travelers who want to explore protected habitats, hiking trails and traces of regional history. Rocky slopes with steppe vegetation sit alongside meadows and wetlands in the floodplain of the Radnický potok. Kamenec therefore offers different ways to plan a trip: its landscape, paths through the valley, and the history of the settlement and mining.

Natural Areas and Protected Habitats

The natural area includes a relatively well-preserved floodplain and drying steppe formations. Both habitat types provide a home to numerous plant and animal species. The Kamenec Nature Monument was first placed under protection on February 27, 1954. The rocky slopes with steppe vegetation, along with the adjoining meadows and wetlands, show how close dry and wet landscape areas lie to one another here.

Species that make their home in Kamenec include the Dusky Large Blue and the Esparsette Blue. A steep slope with dry grass and stones is also located by the meadow protected as the Kamenec Nature Monument. Lizards and slowworms bask there. The meadow and the slope are distinct landscape features: the meadow is protected, while the slope is described as a neighboring habitat.

The landscape shaped by past mining near Kamenec also provides habitat, including for many rare beetle species. Those interested in nature and landscapes will therefore find not only floodplain and steppe vegetation here, but also habitats connected with the history of mining.

Hiking Trails and Access

The Okružní trasa Radnický potok circular hike passes through Kamenec and the valley of the Radnický potok. The Hylákův okruh nature trail also passes through Kamenec; the nature monument is one of its main attractions. The routes have different highlights: the circular hike focuses on the route through the stream valley, while the Hylákův okruh features the nature monument as a notable destination.

The Kamenec natural area can be reached from Kamenec via the green hiking trail or cycling route 352. If you are planning a visit, check local trail conditions before setting out. This will help you plan your approach on foot or by bike using the two access routes mentioned, without assuming a specific walking or cycling time.

The combination of themes may also help you choose a destination: the Radnický potok connects the area to the valley, while the description of the Hylákův okruh highlights the nature monument. Both routes pass through Kamenec, but offer different landscape features to consider when planning.

Settlement History and Mining

The settlement of Kamenec was founded in 1760 by Baron Ledebour, owner of the Liblín estate. German workers were the first to settle there. This history of its founding adds the settlement's early development to the story of its natural surroundings.

Early mining is another part of the area's history. Coal-bearing rock was mined in Kamenec to produce alum and green vitriol. Visible traces of the mining remain in the surrounding area. Mining is therefore not only a historical topic, but is also connected with the landscape described today.

Along a route near Kamenec, there is also a visibly more barren landscape associated with the former mining of pyrite shale to produce sulfuric acid.
