Ujčín appeals to travelers who want to include historic architecture and a cycling route in their plans. The village is home to a preserved castle ensemble, a fortress, the Chapel of St. Wenceslas and a watermill known as Flossmanův. Cycle Route 2086 also passes through Ujčín. This gives you two distinct focuses to choose from when planning your trip: the village’s architectural history or Ujčín’s place on a longer cycling route.

Castle Ensemble and Building History

The preserved castle ensemble includes a wing, an arcaded courtyard, Renaissance vaults and an octagonal, two-storey tower. Its features range from the courtyard and a building wing to the vaults and tower. Together, they offer a concrete impression of the variety of the surviving architecture, rather than reducing the ensemble to a single building style.

The fortress in Ujčín was probably built in the 15th century and is first mentioned in written records in 1516. The castle was converted into a farm estate at the beginning of the 19th century. The chronology requires a distinction: the fortress’s construction date is an estimate, while 1516 marks its first documented mention. The conversion into a farm estate belongs to the history of the castle and marks a later change to it.

Chapel and Watermill

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas was built in the second half of the 19th century. It has a rectangular floor plan with a three-sided termination on the west side. The chapel stands in the northwestern part of Ujčín, on a grassy area between paths. This brings together two ways of understanding it: the floor plan describes its architectural form, while its position between the paths locates the chapel within the village.

The watermill known as Flossmanův dates from the first half of the 19th century and stands on the Ostružná. The mill’s residential building has a historicizing gable dating from 1888. The dates refer to different features: the first half of the 19th century dates the mill, while 1888 dates the gable on the residential building. This distinction makes the building history more precise than a single date for the entire ensemble would.

Cycling Route and Getting Oriented in the Village

Cycle Route 2086 passes through Ústaleč, Kolinec, Ujčín, Tajanov, Malonice, Javoří and Podolí, continuing on to Běšiny. Ujčín is therefore part of a specifically named sequence of places. If you are planning a cycling trip around a theme, you can place a visit to the village within this route. The route offers a different perspective from the architectural history: it draws attention to Ujčín’s place in a longer sequence of stages.

From the slope east of the village, there is a view of the castle in Ujčín. Railway line No. 185 between Horažďovice předm. and Domažlice also runs along the edge of Ujčín. These two details help you get oriented in different ways: the slope offers a view of the castle, while the railway line locates the village at the edge of the built-up area and between the named places.
