Obytce – Castle History and Chapels
Accommodation in Obytce
Obytce offers several distinct points of interest for a culture-focused trip. The castle recalls an early fortress and its later Baroque form; St. Barbara’s Chapel and a memorial lime tree add to the village’s history. There are also named historic routes. This makes it possible to consider architectural history, memorial sites and route paths as separate interests, rather than reducing Obytce to a single landmark.
Castle History and Baroque Architecture
Obytce Castle stands on the site of an originally Gothic fortress, first mentioned in 1543. In the 18th century, it was converted into a single-storey Baroque castle with U-shaped arcades facing the courtyard. This makes it possible to distinguish two building phases: the Gothic fortress as its origin and the Baroque remodeling of the castle. The U-shape of the arcades and their orientation toward the courtyard give the later structure a specific architectural feature. Visitors interested in architecture can thus connect the term Baroque with a clearly described building element.
St. Barbara’s Chapel and the Memorial Lime Tree
The Baroque Chapel of St. Barbara dates from the 17th century and stands on a hill above Obytce. Its construction date and location answer two different questions: when was the building created, and where is it situated in relation to the village? Obytce is also home to a memorial lime tree more than 400 years old. It complements the stone architecture with a natural memorial. The chapel and the lime tree thus represent two different forms of remembrance: a religious building and a tree that has grown over a long period.
Landscape and Legends
The small Klenovka Chapel is associated with local legends. It stands in the forest above Hoštičky at an altitude of 600 metres; Obytce itself lies at the foot of the Plánický hřeben ridge. This places two distinct landscape settings side by side: the village’s location by the ridge and that of the legendary chapel in the forest. The legend offers a distinct cultural perspective alongside the site’s date and architecture.
Routes Connected with Obytce
The Klatovy–Čínov–Barák–Habartice–Obytce–Klatovy route passes through Obytce. A second specific route is the Všerubská Pilgrimage Route: from Barák, it follows a red-marked path along an old stone road in the direction of Obytce. In this case, the route’s direction, marking and road type are all specified. By comparison, the first route mainly provides a sequence of places, while the pilgrimage route highlights its trail markings and course along a historic road.
