Stupno: Railway Museum, Archaeology and Local History
Accommodation in Stupno
Stupno brings together several historical themes to consider when planning your stay: railway history, archaeological traces and the architectural history of the Church of St. Lawrence. There is also a natural monument linked to former mining and leisure facilities in the municipality of Břasy. These themes differ in period and character. If you are looking for a hotel in Stupno, they can help you decide which themes you would like to shape your stay.
Railway History and Information
The Stupno Railway Museum explores the history of the local railway from Chrást to Radnice. The exhibition is located inside the railway station building and has an entrance from the street. The museum also serves as an information point for municipalities along the railway line. The railway from Chrást to Stupno began operating on 1 April 1863. This date provides a specific point of reference for railway history. The railway opened between the fire and reconstruction of the Church of St. Lawrence.
K21 in Stupno is an exhibition and information centre. It adds another exhibition and information-related dimension to the local themes. Check the visiting arrangements for the museum and K21 in advance if you plan to include them in your stay.
Archaeology at Křemenáč
In the Eneolithic period, a hilltop settlement of the so-called Chams culture stood on Křemenáč Hill, also known as Křemelák, near Stupno. A hilltop settlement is a settlement in an elevated location. Preserved pottery sherds from Křemenáč provide evidence of the earliest pottery production in Břasy. Two archaeological aspects therefore come together: the cultural classification of a settlement near Stupno and the significance of the pottery finds for Břasy. The settlement’s period is clearly distinct from the later history of the railway and the church.
Church and Mining History
The original Church of St. Lawrence dates back to 1352. It burned down in 1854 and was rebuilt in 1880. These three dates form a clear sequence of construction, fire and reconstruction. The Bašta natural monument adds a landscape and industrial aspect to the history of the surrounding area. It lies west of Stupno, near Kříše, and preserves part of a coal seam from the former Kliment open-pit mine. Here, the status of a natural monument meets the memory of a former open-pit mine.
Leisure Facilities in the Municipality of Břasy
In the municipality of Břasy, the Ultramarinka leisure centre combines a 33-metre-high chimney, a reminder of the area’s former industrial use, with a range of leisure activities. These include an inline skating track, a pump track, a disc golf course, beach volleyball, a climbing wall and swimming. This adds a dedicated area for sports and leisure activities in the municipality of Břasy to the themes of railways, archaeology and architectural history.
