The Šumava Natura 2000 site comprises Šumava National Park, the Šumava Protected Landscape Area and part of the Šumava Biosphere Reserve. It extends from Svatá Kateřina in the Klatovy District southeastwards to Přední Výtoň in the Český Krumlov District. The landscape is therefore integrated into a large-scale framework of protected areas whose named components encompass different forms of protection.

Mount Stangenruck lies in the immediate surroundings of Svatá Kateřina. The mountains of Kronwithöhe, Lovečná and Jägerhübel are also located around the village. The Bayerwald-Tierpark Lohberg is likewise situated in the surrounding area. The protected area PP U Radošína lies within the cadastral area of Svatá Kateřina; a former amphibolite quarry is located there.

Culture and history

The Hradčany Hillfort is designated as a monument in Svatá Kateřina. A particular detail of the border region is shown by boundary stone 15C: on the Bavarian side, it bears no carved and colour-highlighted Bavarian coat of arms because the border follows a watercourse there and the Chodská Úhlava forms a meander in the opposite direction.

In the wider regional surroundings of Svatá Kateřina are the Neunussberg castle ruins and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Chammünster. Both destinations broaden the view beyond the immediate locality and border area, without their geographical setting being equated with that of the nearby mountains or protected areas.

Parking is available directly on site at the Svatá Kateřina border crossing. On weekdays, buses run from Nýrsko to the stops Chudenín, Svatá Kateřina and, with limited service, also Chudenín, Svatá Kateřina, st.hr. This means that both a specific car park at the border crossing and named weekday bus connections are documented for the locality. The bus connection is expressly limited to weekdays and the stops named above.
