Zbiroh: Castle, Museums and Educational Trails

Zbiroh lies on the border between the Křivoklátsko and Brdy protected landscape areas. Zbiroh Castle offers guided tours of its historic interiors.

The town thus combines two different approaches: at the castle, built heritage is the focus, while the landscape becomes visible along the marked trails and at the transitions between the two protected areas.

Nature

The “Zbirožské vyhlídky” educational trail begins at the information centre and follows a red-marked hiking trail to the castle gate of Zbiroh Castle. The trail has five stops.

The “Trůn krále železnic” educational trail is 6.5 kilometres long and has eight stops. It leads from the square in Zbiroh along the railway embankment of the former Strousberg Railway to a pond near the settlement of V Čápu.

“Toulky Starým Zbirohem” begins at the information centre on Masaryk Square and initially follows the green-marked hiking trail. The first stop beyond the bridge over the Zbirožský Brook presents the history of Zbiroh.

The educational trails focus on different aspects: one connects the starting point with the castle, one follows the traces of the former railway, and one leads through the historic part of the town. The number of stops and the length of the trail also differ. This means that a walk can be viewed primarily in terms of its destination, its linear history along the route or its connection with the town.

Zbiroh Castle is part of a popular cycling route through the Křivoklát Highlands.

Culture

The J. V. Sládek Museum and the Zbiroh Town Museum are located at the original site of the poet’s birthplace. The permanent exhibition of the J. Sládek Museum presents his private life through furniture and furnishings from the poet’s Prague apartment, as well as twelve chronologically arranged panels.

The Zbiroh Town Museum presents the development of ironmaking, crafts and guilds in the Zbiroh area, the vanished craft of nail making, and the business activities of B. H. Strousberg, the “King of the Railways”.

History

The parish church of St Nicholas in Zbiroh is documented as a Gothic church as early as 1364. In 1716, it was extensively rebuilt in the Baroque style; it was restored in 1883 and again in 1921.

Food and Drink

The Zbiroh Castle Tavern serves boiled beef and other specialities in an authentic medieval setting. The vineyard in the English park of Zbiroh Castle produces wine that can be purchased at the visitor centre or in the castle tavern.

Getting There

Zbiroh is 6 kilometres from the D5 junction towards Prague–Pilsen. Kařez railway stop can be reached by bus. This places road and rail connections at different arrival points.
