A stay in Železná Ruda can be planned around different interests: glassmaking and industry, natural history, or trails with seasonal conditions. The attractions also differ in form: the museum and environmental centre feature exhibitions, the educational trail has stops, and other destinations are reached via marked or seasonal trails.

Glassmaking History and Industry

The permanent exhibition at the Muzeum Šumavy Železná Ruda focuses on rare examples of local glassmaking. The museum is housed in a villa built by Krištof Abele in 1877. Another section of the permanent exhibition covers ironworking and the hammer mills of the Šumava.

The Sklářská educational trail passes through the area around Železná Ruda and Špičák and has 16 stops about glassmaking in the Šumava. The emphasis differs: one attraction presents local examples of glassmaking in a permanent exhibition, while the other explores glassmaking in the Šumava along an educational trail.

Nature in the Šumava

The Environmentální centrum Železná Ruda presents the fauna and flora of the Šumava. It also features exhibitions on the region’s geology and geomorphology. These terms have different focuses: geology deals, among other things, with rocks and the structure of the Earth’s crust, while geomorphology concerns the forms of the Earth’s surface. This makes it possible to distinguish topics relating to animal and plant life from geological and landscape perspectives.

One specifically named natural attraction is the glacial lake Jezero Laka. It is the smallest, shallowest and highest-elevation glacial lake in the Šumava. These three features describe its distinctive status among the lakes of the Šumava.

Trails by Season and Activity

In winter, a route maintained for pedestrians leads from Železná Ruda first along the blue-marked trail and then along the red-marked trail to Čertovo jezero. This describes a specific seasonal walking route with a set sequence of trail markings; no walking time or difficulty level is specified.

On the signposted cycling loop from Železná Ruda via Špičák, the chairlift to the summit of Pancíř also carries bicycles. It operates seasonally. If you plan to transport your bicycle, check the chairlift’s current operating status before setting out.

The trails therefore differ mainly by activity and season: a pedestrian route to Čertovo jezero is maintained in winter, while the cycling loop depends on the seasonal operation of the chairlift to Pancíř.
