Bechyně brings together a distinctive railway and bridge history with a monastery above the Lužnice, a castle tour, museums and named circular routes. These different themes can help guide your choice of stay: Bechyňská duha represents transport and construction history, while museums offer insights into ceramics, local history and tourism. Architecture, exhibitions, landscape and activity each add their own emphasis.

Railway, bridge and circular routes

Regular service on the Tábor–Bechyně railway line began in June 1903. In 1929, the line was extended across the Lužnice to Bechyně, crossing Bechyňská duha along the way. The bridge, also known as Duhový most, serves both road and rail traffic; its roadway is shared. Its arch span is 90 metres, and it stands 50 metres above the water level of the Lužnice. This makes it a structure where a transport function meets striking dimensions. If you are interested in engineering structures, you can consider this history alongside the town’s religious and museum themes.

The visitor offering includes several described hiking and cycling routes through places of interest in the Bechyňsko area. Two named circular routes can be compared by length: the Bechyňské vyhlídky circular route is 4 kilometres long, while the Okruh Židovou strouhou is 11 kilometres long. This lets you include a shorter or longer route in your plans without needing to estimate a walking time. Check the current condition of the trails before setting out.

Castle, monastery and sacred buildings

Bechyně Castle has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. The guided tour begins with a stroll through the castle park. As times may change, it is advisable to check visiting hours in advance. This lets you combine a visit to the castle with a look around the park, rather than planning it solely as a tour of the building.

The monastery, with the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, stands on a rock above the Lužnice. The monastery contains the largest collection of cell vaults in the Czech Republic. The monastery garden has seating and views of the Lužnice Valley, framed by Bechyňská duha. The combination of monastery architecture, riverside setting and valley views gives this place a different emphasis from the history of transport and bridges. St Michael’s Church is also part of the cultural offering: it hosts concerts and exhibitions.

Museums, ceramics and local history

The International Ceramic Museum in Bechyně displays the permanent exhibition “Porta Ceramica” from the AJG collections. The Bechyně Town Museum offers a permanent exhibition on the history of the town and its surroundings. The museum also includes a gallery with seasonal exhibitions and workshops. If you specifically want to visit the gallery, it is worth checking the current programme, as its exhibitions are seasonal.

The Bechyně Tourism Museum is a separate institution. It opened in 2006 and is considered the first museum of its kind in the Czech Republic. Its focus is the development of tourism in the Czech Republic and Europe. A permanent exhibition is also devoted to the history of Jewish communities in the Bechyňsko area. When planning your visit, you can therefore distinguish between ceramic collections, local history, and a historical perspective on tourism and Jewish communities.

Another theme: the spa

At Bechyně Spa, natural peat soil from its own peat bogs near Bechyně is suitable for warming and relaxing the body. The specific treatments available may vary. The spa thus adds a wellness dimension to the cultural and landscape themes, without limiting your choice of stay to a single activity.
