When planning a trip to Choustnik, nature and outdoor activities go hand in hand with architecture and history. The nature reserve is characterized by weathered rocks and old-growth forest; the castle and the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary each have their own architectural and historical features. This makes it possible to explore the area through specific themes rather than focusing on just one attraction.

Rocks, Forest and Climbing

The Choustník Nature Reserve was established in 1949 and covers 9.9 hectares. Its rock city was formed by gradual weathering and is surrounded by old-growth forest. The rock consists of coarse-grained Choustník orthogneiss with prominent black tourmaline inclusions. Both the weathering-shaped formations and the composition of the rock are relevant to the landscape views.

The Choustnické skály offer almost every form of climbing. A green-marked hiking trail runs along the edge of the nature reserve. Climbing on the rocks and following the trail along the reserve’s edge offer different ways to spend time outdoors.

Trails and Access

From the parking area behind the village of Choustník, you can reach the Choustnické skály in about 15 minutes on foot via the green-marked trail leading to the castle. This time estimate applies to the walk to the rocks, not to the duration of a longer visit to the area. As local access conditions may change, check the current situation before your visit. This helps you distinguish the walk to the nature area from the time you wish to spend there when planning your day.

Castle and Church

Choustník Castle is an extensive ruin with massive walls and two square palace towers. One of the towers was converted into an observation tower; from there, the view extends across Soběslavsko and Táborsko. The tower provides a scenic counterpoint to the ruin’s architecture, making the views as much a part of the castle as its architectural form.

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Choustník was originally Gothic and was founded in the 14th century. It was destroyed during the Hussite Wars and rebuilt between 1673 and 1687. Today, it has a single nave and a tower on its west side. In contrast to the castle, the church’s history is conveyed particularly through the sequence of its founding, destruction, and reconstruction; the castle is defined above all by its walls and palace towers.

The Medieval Festival at Choustník Castle on August 9, 2025, featured historical fencing, historical dance, falconry, and craft demonstrations.

The church is also a place of worship. In 2026, services take place on Sundays at 11 a.m., as well as on Wednesdays and Fridays; in winter, weekday Masses begin at 3:30 p.m. As times may change, check the current service schedule before visiting. The walking time to the rocks and the church schedule serve different planning purposes: the former indicates access time, while the latter provides a time reference for attending a service.

If you are looking for a hotel in Choustnik, plan your trip according to whether rocks and climbing or the castle, views, and church history matter more to you.
