When visiting Drahov, you can focus on local history, local traditions, or spending time outdoors. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a defining feature of the village; walks along the nearby Nežárka River and in the forests around Drahov, as well as cycling in the surrounding area, offer further ways to explore. The protected habitats at Farářský Pond are another natural feature. If you are looking for a hotel in Drahov, these themes can help you narrow down the kind of trip you want.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and its architectural history

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands at Drahov’s highest point, at 441 m. It is documented as a parish church as early as 1359. The masonry building dates from the early 15th century and has a regular cross-shaped floor plan. A Gothic structure, the church was altered in the second half of the 16th century and again in the 19th century. These dates represent different stages: 1359 marks its status as a parish church, the early 15th century dates the masonry building, and the later periods mark subsequent alterations. Remnants of the original wall paintings and a stone baptismal font have been preserved inside. The church is also protected by the National Heritage Institute. The cross-shaped floor plan describes the building’s layout, while the Gothic classification identifies its architectural style; the two terms describe the architecture from different perspectives.

Pilgrimages and local traditions

A Marian chapel and a spring are located near the church. According to local tradition, the water is believed to have healing properties. The revived tradition of the Senné pilgrimage processions takes pilgrims from Veselí nad Lužnicí, via nearby Zlukov, to the pilgrimage church in Drahov on the first Sunday in July. Annual customs include a masked procession through the village and a children’s masked carnival. The Drahov Traktoriáda brings together tractors of various makes, model years, and ages. If you plan to include one of these events in your trip, check the date for the relevant year.

Landscape and outdoor activities

A road running through Drahov also forms the boundary of the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area.

Protected habitats at Farářský Pond include species-rich mesotrophic to waterlogged meadow communities, sedge and rush stands, and shoreline vegetation with shrubby willows.

The nearby Nežárka River and the forests around Drahov are suitable for walks. Cycling is another good option in the surrounding area. This gives you two different points of reference when planning: specific landscape features for a walk and the surrounding area for cycling.

Travelling by train

For train travel planning, Veselí nad Lužnicí is a regional point of reference: its railway junction is about 4 km from Drahov. From there, train connections run to Prague, České Budějovice, and České Velenice, as well as to Brno via Jindřichův Hradec. Before travelling, check the connections and timetables that suit you and include this information in your travel plans.
