Žíšov offers several distinct points of interest to help you plan your trip: local history, brass band tradition, nature and cycling tours. If you are looking for a hotel in Žíšov, you can decide whether you are more interested in its architectural and local history, the Doubí u Žíšova Natural Monument or a cycling tour. The chapel and village square tell different sides of the area’s history.

Chapel and Village Square

The chapel was built in 1837 by the local judge Jan Šafránek on the site of a bell tower. The bell had been stolen there several times before. The building is therefore associated with a specific predecessor and a particular reason for its construction. Its dedication also has a dated history: the chapel was originally dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk; on 26 June 1907, it was consecrated to Saint Anne. The year it was built and its later consecration mark two distinct milestones.

At the village square in Žíšov, you can see the architectural style known as Selské baroko, a term also used elsewhere in South Bohemia. Farmsteads stand around the square, while smaller agricultural buildings are located on the other two streets. The village’s appearance can therefore be understood through more than just the square: the buildings on the other two streets are also among the area’s defining features.

Brass Band Music and Local Traditions

Matěj Kubeš was born in Žíšov on 13 January 1892 and founded his own brass band, “Blaťácká kapela.” During his life, he composed about 300 pieces for small brass ensembles. The song “Okolo Žíšova” was first performed in 1999 at a Kubešova Soběslav celebration. Kubeš’s biography, band and compositions are all part of his story; the song’s first performance marks a separate point in time.

The Masopust traditions in Žíšov include a procession of people in masks, with stops at local houses. Alongside the history of music, this adds another aspect of local tradition: a procession whose stops are the houses in the village.

Doubí u Žíšova Natural Monument

The Doubí u Žíšova Natural Monument protects part of a natural acidophilous oak forest in the floodplain of the Lužnice. The protected area also includes wet floodplain meadows with temporary and permanent pools. Specially protected animal and plant species occur within the natural monument’s protected zone. The forest, floodplain, meadows and pools are distinct features of the protected landscape.

Cycling Routes with Different Details

The GW Selského baroka cycle route runs from Veselí nad Lužnicí through Žíšov to Borkovice. Check route conditions and signage locally before setting out. The “Po stopách selského baroka” cycling tour is 24 kilometres long. These details provide different guidance for your planning: the GW route information gives its course through Žíšov and its endpoints, while the other tour’s total distance is specified. You can choose based on which information is most important for planning your ride.
