Jistebnice: Cultural History and Paths in Nature
Accommodation in Jistebnice
Jistebnice combines cultural history with specific outdoor destinations. The Richard Lauda Memorial Hall features a permanent exhibition of paintings; to the north, the Městské sady forest park and its cascade of ponds are part of the townscape. An educational trail, hiking trails and cycling routes offer a range of activities. The church tower and the Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene also provide distinct cultural and scenic highlights.
Cultural History in Jistebnice
The Richard Lauda Memorial Hall is located in the building known as “Zámeček” at náměstí 167. It houses a permanent exhibition of paintings by Richard Lauda. Visits can be arranged by telephone with a member of the Jistebnice Town Office staff. Call ahead to arrange a time before your visit, as arrangements may change.
The Jistebnický Kancionál contains the earliest surviving written record of the Hussite hymn “Ktož jsú boží bojovníci.” The Kancionál was found in 1872 in a Baroque building belonging to the deanery. The year 1872 refers to the discovery of the Kancionál, not to the surviving written record of the hymn. These are two distinct points of cultural reference: Richard Lauda’s paintings in the memorial hall and the written record of the Hussite hymn.
The tower of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is a prominent landmark in Jistebnice. For travelers interested in sacred architecture as well as exhibitions and written records, it is another cultural point of interest in the town.
Forest Park, Educational Trail and Routes
The Městské sady forest park was created around a cascade of ponds in the north of Jistebnice. The ponds include Chadimák, Obecní, Nový and Kaplice. Together, they form the sequence of ponds around which the forest park developed. If you are looking for parkland and waterscapes during your stay, this combination offers a clear focus.
The Jistebnickými sady educational trail is just under five kilometers long and is laid out as an easy circular route with ten stops. If you are looking for a specific loop, its layout, length and difficulty level are all clearly stated for planning purposes. The trail is intended for hikers and mountain bikers; in winter, it is also intended for cross-country skiers. The choice of activity therefore also depends on the season: cross-country skiing is for winter.
Several hiking trails pass through Jistebnice. For cycling trips, you can set off from Jistebnice along the Greenways Čertovo břemeno cycling routes. Alongside the educational trail, you can choose from hiking routes through the town and a specific starting point for cycling trips.
Chapel and Views
A Stations of the Cross route leads to the Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene on the hill southwest of Jistebnice. In clear weather, the chapel offers views across the surrounding landscape as far as the peaks of the Šumava Mountains. This destination brings together a religious route, a location above the town and distant views that depend on visibility. The tower of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel serves a different purpose: it is a prominent landmark in Jistebnice, while the chapel is the destination of the Stations of the Cross route.
