Mazice: Village Green, Monuments and Moorland
Accommodation in Mazice
Mazice combines a distinctive historic centre with a landscape on the edge of peatlands. In 1995, the village was declared a village monument reserve. The historic core is a spacious, circular village green with a pond at its centre. The designation as a village monument reserve applies to the status of the village; the circular shape describes the layout of the historic core. The protected status and settlement form are therefore two different aspects of the village’s character.
Village Green and Historic Buildings
The Chapel of Saint Anne, dating from the second half of the 19th century, stands by the pond. Another distinctive sight is the stone Baroque bridge. It has a chapel with a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1671. The bridge and its niche chapel are protected as a monument.
The granary next to House No. 5 is considered the oldest building in Mazice and is said to date from 1613. It was among the early buildings whose original timber construction was converted into a masonry building. The year 1853 is inscribed on the gable of the forge.
Mažická Stodola is a historic building and the last surviving part of the former so-called Mažický dvůr, House No. 16. The Stodola has rooms for leisure activities and recreational sports, as well as for cultural and social events in the municipality. The building history of the former farmstead and its uses described here are different aspects of the building.
Moorland and Trails
Mazice lies on the edge of peatlands, amid fields and meadows. The Veselská blata natural monument also includes the cadastral area of Mazice. It protects a transitional bog within a basin mire, with characteristic flora and fauna, as well as flooded areas, wet meadows and other wetland habitats.
The Mažický nature trail provides information about life in the Blata in the past and today, local Blata architecture, traditional Blata folk costumes and peat extraction. The circular route starts at the village green, leads to the Veselská blata natural monument and returns via Zálší. A description from 2022 gives circular routes of 2 and 4.5 kilometres, as well as six information panels with activities for children. Check these route details before your trip if the distances are important for your plans. Mazice, the starting point for the nature trail, is accessible by car or bicycle.
In the wider area around Mazice, the Borkovická blata nature trail explores a protected peat bog with typical bog vegetation. The route is 6.5 kilometres long, with most of it running along wooden boardwalks. In addition to the Mažický circular routes, this offers a separate, longer route through the moorland.
Another cycling route is the signposted 51-kilometre circular route “Na Borkovická blata a za lidovou architekturou” (To Borkovická blata and the Folk Architecture). The routes described differ in both length and theme: the Mažický nature trail covers village life and Blata culture, while the route through Borkovická blata explores a protected peat bog.
Plan your trip around the cultural and natural features that interest you most.
