Mezná: Ponds, Village History and a Cycling Route
Accommodation in Mezná
Mezná combines a landscape shaped by forests and ponds with historic buildings and a cycling tour through several places. Depending on your interests, you can focus on the waters, architectural history or cycling during your stay. At the ponds, you can compare specific areas; the historic buildings offer different points of reference in time and place.
Pond Landscape and Size Comparison
Mezná is surrounded by forests and numerous ponds; there are sixteen ponds in total within the cadastral area. Three of them cover more than ten hectares: Starosta, at 12.2 hectares; Nový mezenský, at 11.9 hectares; and Těšín, at 10.7 hectares. The figures allow for a direct comparison: Starosta is 0.3 hectares larger than Nový mezenský and 1.5 hectares larger than Těšín. Nový mezenský is 1.2 hectares larger than Těšín. This places the total number of bodies of water alongside specific area figures; the pond landscape can be described both by its abundance and by the sizes of individual named ponds.
Historic Buildings in the Village
The former manor tavern, No. 6, stands on the village green and is locally known as the “old tavern.” It is documented in sources as far back as the Thirty Years’ War; Martin Zámečník is the earliest tavern keeper identified by name, for the years 1691 to 1697. Another historic point of reference is Tvrziště Mezná: the fortification, with its circular ground plan, dates from the 14th century and lies about 300 metres southwest of the centre. The two sites therefore differ both in their dates and their locations: the tavern stands on the village green, while Tvrziště lies southwest of the centre.
Chapel and Former School
The Chapel of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built shortly after 1828. It replaced an earlier masonry chapel or bell tower on the same site. After repairs to the chapel, the first pilgrimage was held in Mezná in July 1934.
The former school building also links past and present uses: it now houses the Mezná municipal office. The school operated for a total of 68 years, and since 2009 the building has also housed Hospůdka Ve Škole. The 68 years of school operation give the building’s former use a specific duration, while the municipal office marks its present use.
Putting the Village’s History in Chronological Order
The dated sites and events can be arranged in chronological order: Tvrziště dates from the 14th century, the tavern is documented as far back as the Thirty Years’ War, and Martin Zámečník is identified as the earliest tavern keeper by name for the years 1691 to 1697. Later came the chapel, built shortly after 1828, and the first pilgrimage in July 1934. This chronological span places different parts of the village’s history from the Middle Ages through the 20th century.
Cycling Tour Through Several Places
The “Planá nad Lužnicí” cycling tour passes through Chotěmice, Nová Ves, Mezná and Kvasejovice. It then follows a better-maintained farm track towards Zvěrotice. The sequence of places and the farm track that follows mark two sections of the route: first, the villages listed above, then the direction towards Zvěrotice. If you plan to focus your stay on cycling, Mezná is a specific point on a route through several places.
