Mlýny lies in the valley of the Černovický potok. Several topics provide a concrete starting point for planning your trip: the geological formation on the eastern edge of the village, the history of St. Catherine’s Church, the oak avenue and a cycling route to Psárov. This can help you decide whether architectural history, landscapes or cycling should be the focus of your stay.

Landscape and geology

The protected geological area of Křemenný val lies on the eastern edge of Mlýny. It is an 80-metre-long and 6-metre-high remnant of a fissure in gneiss filled with quartz. Its length and height give the formation a tangible scale; the quartz filling and gneiss define its geological character. Those interested in geology will find a distinctive feature of the landscape here.

East of Mlýny, near Mrázkův mlýn, is Mrázkova alej, an avenue of 150 oaks. Its registration as a significant landscape feature has been proposed. Unlike the protected Křemenný val, the focus here is an oak grove for which such registration has been proposed. The two sites therefore offer different nature-related themes: a geological formation and an avenue with a specific number of oaks.

St. Catherine’s Church and the village’s history

The single-nave, originally Gothic St. Catherine’s Church dates from the mid-14th century. Original Gothic tracery survives in three of its windows. “Single-nave” describes a church with one main nave; tracery refers to the stonework dividing a window. Here, these terms refer to specific features of the church. It is also protected as an immovable cultural monument.

St. Catherine’s was first mentioned in 1379. In 1402, the filial church was separated from the church in Choustník and elevated to parish-church status. In 1609, it underwent a major renovation and its tower was rebuilt. These dates mark distinct stages: the first mention, the change to parish status and a later structural renovation. This makes it possible to trace the history chronologically, rather than treating these events as a single building phase.

Mill by the stream and cycling route

About one kilometre upstream along the Černovický potok is the well-preserved mill near “Vařečků”, which serves as a place for recreation. The approximate distance and upstream location provide a point of reference in the landscape along the stream. So, alongside geology, a waterside recreation spot may also be of interest when planning your trip.

An asphalt cycling route leads from Mlýny around Strážiště hill, which has a telecommunications transmitter, to Psárov. It provides a specific route option for travellers interested in cycling. Surface and access conditions may change; check them before setting out on a particular ride.

When choosing a destination, these interests are easy to distinguish: St. Catherine’s offers several historical periods, Křemenný val represents a geological formation with specific dimensions, and the cycling route leads towards Psárov. If these topics suit your trip, you can include Mlýny in your hotel search.
