Opařany combines a former Jesuit monastery, church buildings, and a listed park with designated walking routes. The combination of architectural history and nature is particularly tangible when choosing a place to stay: you can explore historic interiors on guided tours, visit the public park, or consider the route to Jezuitský vrch. Visiting conditions vary from place to place.

Monastery, Church, and Architectural History

The former Jesuit monastery in Building A was created between 1717 and 1727 from a former stone fortress. The Baroque monastery gate, Markéta, is named after the fresco of Saint Margaret in its gable. Tours of the interiors of the former monastery include the cloister, the Baroque refectory hall, museum rooms, and the church’s oratory rooms. Building A also houses a permanent exhibition of historical documents and objects relating to the history of psychiatry in Opařany. The monastery building and the local history of psychiatry thus offer two distinct ways to explore the building.

The Church of Saint Francis Xavier was built from 1732 to 1735 on the site of an earlier church dating from the mid-17th century. The main altar features an image of the Black Madonna. Another stop is the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, which stands right next to the Church of Saint Wenceslas and is itself a protected cultural monument. Its construction features mixed masonry, a square floor plan, a curved gable, and a roof with double-laid tiles. The interior is also square and is vaulted with a ribbed cross vault.

The Opařany water tower was built in 1901. The monastery’s construction period, from 1717 to 1727, the church’s, from 1732 to 1735, and the later date of the water tower place the three buildings in different periods.

Park and Walking Routes

The DPN Opařany park is a protected cultural monument and is open to the public daily from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. A dendrological educational trail runs through the park, with signs on the rarer trees. The park’s protected status gives it its own cultural and historical significance, while the trail and tree signs reveal its dendrological character.

The park’s educational trail focuses on the labeled rarer trees; a paved forest path leads from Opařany to Jezuitský vrch and the image of the Black Madonna. The two walking routes therefore differ in their focus and destination. Historically, the forest path is associated with the Jesuits, who once walked it after preparing at the monastery for their work as preachers and missionaries.
