Přeštěnice: Chapels, History and Views
Accommodation in Přeštěnice
In Přeštěnice, a long local history, several chapels and a hilly landscape with scenic views come together. Visitors choosing the place for a stay will find a variety of points of interest: religious buildings with specific dates, historical links to the region, and opportunities to take in the landscape and local activities.
Chapels and History in Přeštěnice
The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands in the village square. It was blessed on 15 August 1883, and the first Mass was held there on the same day. The altarpiece is also part of its history: it was created by Jan Heřman, an academic painter from Prague. The chapel thus links a clearly dated occasion with a named artist.
An earlier point in the village’s history is its first historical mention, dating to 1379. Historically, the place belonged to the Rožmberk estate, which was associated with Příběnice Castle. The dates of the chapels provide a different sense of chronology: in Mlčkov stands a wayside chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sepekov, dating from 1795. In Týnice there is a chapel built in 1884 and dedicated to Our Lady of Klášter. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity in Držkrajov was built in its present form in 1907.
The Koutník Chapel also has a precisely specified location: it stands beside house No. 35 in the lower part of Přeštěnice. Its construction in 1933 is linked to the reported recovery of František Koutník’s son. The recovery is part of local religious tradition and should not be understood as an independently verified event. Together with the chapels in Mlčkov, Týnice and Držkrajov, it shows that the religious buildings are not confined to the village square and that each has its own local and historical context.
Stráže and the Landscape
At 610 metres above sea level, Stráže is the highest hill in Přeštěnice. In clear weather, the view from there reaches as far as the distant Šumava. The municipality describes the surroundings as foothill country; the village itself also offers a lovely view. This gives visitors two distinct viewpoints: the distant panorama from the highest hill and the view from the village. Those interested in the landscape can consider these details alongside the chapels and their history, rather than defining Přeštěnice by just one building.
Cycling, Horse Riding and Music
Cycle Route 1059 passes through the Přeštěnice area. It is listed in the municipality’s development plan for 2023–2029; check the current route signs before setting out. The route information is a useful starting point for planning, while the local signs provide practical guidance on the ground.
Jezdecký klub Bártův dvůr Přeštěnice offers riding lessons for children and beginners, led by experienced, licensed instructors. If you plan to take lessons, confirm the arrangements before travelling. The club also hosts riding tournaments every year, including qualifying events for the Zlatá Podkova competition. As event dates may vary, it is advisable to check them in advance.
Open Air Music fest Přeštěnice is a regular festival featuring music groups. Alongside the buildings and landscape, horse riding and music are therefore also distinct topics to consider when planning a trip. You can weigh up the different options according to your interests: local history and chapels, views and cycling, or activities related to the riding club and festival.
