Přehořov: Church, memorial sites and cultural landscape
Accommodation in Přehořov
Přehořov brings together a central church complex, local Jewish history, a memorial to RAF pilot Jan Veselý and traces of the historic cultural landscape. The Dírenský potok stream flows through the village; the avenue, remains of the château park and wayside niche chapel represent different layers of architectural and landscape history. When planning your stay, you can focus on what interests you: the St. Anne’s complex offers insight into church architecture, while the cemetery and memorial plaque point to different strands of remembrance. The stream, hiking trail and historic green spaces add to the landscape experience.
St. Anne’s Church and its architectural history
The St. Anne’s Church complex, including its cemetery, occupies a prominent position in the centre of Přehořov. It includes a perimeter wall, two gates and four small chapels. The church was originally early Baroque and was remodelled into its present form in the early 19th century. Its architectural history thus brings together two clearly distinct phases: its original early Baroque character and its later transformation.
Jewish history and remembrance
Written records of a small Jewish settlement in Přehořov date back to the early 17th century. During its first decades, the Jewish cemetery served Jewish people from Přehořov, Soběslav, Veselí and Zlukov. These four place names make the cemetery’s historical connections beyond Přehořov concrete. Two surviving gravestones in the cemetery belong to the same person: Lea Wimmer, also known as Elisabeth or Eleanora. The cemetery is freely accessible; check local conditions before your visit.
A memorial plaque in Přehořov commemorates local RAF pilot Jan Veselý. Přehořov had it installed in front of the municipal office; the plaque features the silhouette of an aircraft. The plaque and the cemetery represent different historical themes: the remembrance of Veselý and the history of the Jewish settlement.
The history of weaving is also part of the village: the craft flourished in Přehořov after numerous weavers had been trained there. This aspect of local craftsmanship complements the religious architectural history and memorial sites.
Landscape, routes and historical layers
The Dírenský potok stream flows through Přehořov. A yellow-marked hiking trail also passes through the village; check local signs before setting out. A second lime-tree avenue leads to Kvasejovice and was laid out in 1822. The surviving remains of the château park lie in undulating terrain on the north-eastern edge of the village and date from the first half of the 19th century. The lime-tree avenue and the park remains therefore belong to a similar historical period, although they are different elements of the cultural landscape.
A wayside niche chapel on the western edge of the village probably dates from the late 18th century. Its probable date adds an older architectural landmark to the perspective offered by the 19th-century landscape features. Travellers interested in local history will find different themes side by side: architectural phases, craftsmanship, remembrance and the historic shaping of the landscape.
