Písecká Smoleč brings together archaeological connections, religious details, and the Sedláčkova stezka trail. Its local history includes a fortification from the Hallstatt period, the first written mention in 1379, and the memory of residents who died in the First World War. Different periods and interests meet here: history, remembrance, and hiking.

History Across Different Periods

The first written mention of Písecká Smoleč dates from 1379. This date marks the earliest written record, not necessarily the founding of the settlement. By contrast, the hillfort fortification dates to the Hallstatt period, and thus to prehistoric times. A medieval written record and a prehistoric fortification therefore stand side by side. This distinction helps keep the settlement’s history from being reduced to a single date.

The Hillfort and Its Setting

The hillfort stands on a prominent spur formed by the last meander of the Židova strouha. A spur is a section of terrain that projects into the surrounding area; the last meander is the river bend that created this landform. The enclosed hillfort complex consists of two parts. Its Hallstatt-period dating places it in time, while the spur and its two-part layout describe its location and structure. Before 1975, coins of unknown age and vessel fragments were found in the courtyard of house no. 12 and in the adjoining garden. The fortification is thus assigned to a clearly defined period, while the age of the coins remains unknown—two archaeological references to the settlement with different degrees of chronological precision.

Religious Connections and Remembrance

The religious heritage of the settlement includes a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, installed in the chapel in Písecká Smoleč on 15 May 2026. The reconstructed Chapel of Saint Adalbert contains a memorial plaque. Twelve names of local residents who did not return home from the First World War are inscribed on it in gold letters. The statue and the plaque highlight different aspects: a religious artwork with a specific installation date, and a roll of names commemorating the war.

The Sedláčkova stezka Trail and Film History

Písecká Smoleč lies on the Sedláčkova stezka trail. For hikers, this provides a specific route to consider when choosing a destination. Since the exact route markings may change, check the current map and trail markers before setting out. Film history offers another perspective: Einstein kontra Babinský, made in 1963, was filmed in part at the fire station on the village square in Písecká Smoleč. This named filming location adds an aspect of film history to the archaeological and religious connections.

When choosing a hotel for a trip to Písecká Smoleč, you can weigh these interests against one another: the trail offers a hiking connection, while the hillfort, chapel, and filming location provide cultural and historical themes. Consider which focus suits your reason for travelling, and use it to guide your choice of destination.
