Discover Protivin: museums, history and nature
Accommodation in Protivin
Protivin can be explored through several distinct themes: local history, art and nature exhibitions, and a longer educational trail offer different ways to plan your trip. Traditional town celebrations and a landscape dotted with ponds add to the picture. Depending on whether you are more interested in history, collections or a longer excursion, you can plan your time in Protivin accordingly.
Local history, art and exhibitions
Protivin’s information centre includes a zoological museum with osteological specimens and taxidermy of reptiles, monkeys, rhinoceroses and giraffes. The information centre also houses a permanent exhibition of collages, prolages and chiasmages by artist Jiřà Kolář, who was born in Protivin. The two collections have different focuses: one features animal specimens, while the other showcases the work of an artist born in the town.
Architecture and brewing history are also part of the local story. St. Elizabeth’s Church on Protivin’s square was completed in 1662 in the Early Baroque style. The brewery in Protivin was founded in 1598. The PamátnĂk mÄ›sta ProtivĂna presents modern historical exhibitions on the history of Protivin and its surroundings, including topics related to the brewery and the railway. The brewery’s history is therefore reflected both as a historical reference and as an exhibition topic; the railway is another subject covered in the exhibitions.
At the PamátnĂk mÄ›sta ProtivĂna, the “Exotická pĹ™Ăroda” exhibition features dioramas of a rainforest, savanna, desert and ocean depths. Interactive elements also appeal to younger visitors. If you are interested in depictions of nature, you can see a range of landscapes side by side here, without having to focus on a single group of animals.
Clocks, hands-on activities and crocodiles
Královstvà času displays more than 1,200 clocks, wristwatches and alarm clocks. The collection is complemented by a watchmaking workshop for children, where visitors can make, among other things, models of alarm clocks, wristwatches or hand puppets. There is also an outdoor playground in an enclosed garden, giving children a safe place to play and be active. The exhibition, workshop and playground are three distinct offerings to consider when planning your visit.
Another way to engage with the animal world is the educational experience programme at KrokodĂ˝lĂ ZOO ProtivĂn: “Poznej dokonalĂ˝ vĂ˝tvor evoluce – Seznam se s krokodĂ˝lem” introduces visitors to crocodiles. Unlike the specimens at the zoological museum, the focus here is on encountering the subject of crocodiles. Check the programme’s availability before you travel.
Educational trail and pond landscape
The NS Blanice educational trail is 23 kilometres long and is described as suitable for walking, full-day family outings and cycling. The stated walking time for family outings is four to five hours; by bike, it is about two and a half hours. These time estimates can help you weigh up a longer walk against the shorter stated cycling time.
You can start the educational trail in Protivin at the bus stop on the square in front of the museum or in front of the railway station. However, the official starting point is in the passageway of the Protivin Museum. The starting information and a map of the trail are displayed there. If you want to use the official starting point, follow the signs to this passageway rather than relying only on the other possible starting points mentioned.
Another nature feature is a group of 13 ponds between Protivin and the PĂsek Mountains. Ten of these ponds are protected as the “Zelendárky” natural monument. While NS Blanice is described as an educational trail with a specified length and estimated times, the ponds offer a separate reason to explore the protected landscape between the town and the mountains.
Planning and timing your trip
Protivin’s information centre provides information about transport links, accommodation, dining, and cultural and sporting events, and sells maps for cyclists. If you need specific information or a map for your plans, ask there in advance. The traditional town celebrations take place every year on the last weekend in August; check the event dates for your planned trip. This lets you treat the cultural programme, visits to collections and a possible trip on the NS Blanice as separate parts of your stay.
