Rataje brings together church architecture, archaeological traces and rural architecture. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip here, these different themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: church architecture, an archaeological educational trail, historic farmsteads or activities on the Smutná.

Church and Architectural History

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Rataje is already mentioned in written sources from 1384. The present-day church was created through a Baroque renovation in the early 18th century. The year 1384 refers to the written mention, not the later renovation. Inside, the church preserves valuable spaces with intact vaults, a coved ceiling and stone floors. The early written mention, the creation of the present-day church and the surviving features of its interior can therefore be understood as distinct aspects of its architectural history.

Archaeology and Sites

The Jan Karel Hraše archaeological educational trail can be walked as a continuous excursion of about 15 km along both banks of the Smutná. The river is crossed below Haškovcova Lhota. The information boards provide details about the respective sites and Hraše’s research. They also cover archaeology today, its research methods and the evaluation of results. The trail thus focuses not only on finds, but also on how archaeological research works and interprets its results. The distance is approximate; local path and river conditions may change. Check them before setting out.

South of Rataje lies the Na Homoli grove. There, historian and writer Jan Karel Hraše discovered dozens of burial mounds. This makes it another archaeological point of interest alongside the educational trail; the two themes can be considered separately: here, the focus is on Hraše’s discovery, while the trail also explains archaeological sites and research methods.

Historic Farmsteads and Rural Architecture

The Valy ratajské are surviving remains of a medieval fortification. The former mill on the Smutná tells a different architectural story: it is a Neoclassical rural farmstead dating from the late 18th century, with a two-gabled layout. Later alterations are also part of its history. On the lower side of the village green stands a rural farmstead with a timber-framed house and outbuildings; it was probably built in the first half of the 19th century. Rataje also has houses in the South Bohemian Folk Baroque style.

The architectural forms and dates offer different points of comparison: the former mill is distinguished by its Neoclassical classification and two-gabled layout, while the farmstead by the village green is described by its timber-framed house and outbuildings. Its dating is explicitly approximate. Together with the medieval fortification remains and the church, these buildings offer a broad view of different periods in local architectural history, without implying that the buildings belong to the same era.

Activities and Events

A paddling trip on the Smutná can begin at the bridge in Rataje. Water levels, obstacles and navigability vary; check local conditions before planning this activity.

Rataje is home to the DUHA bagpipe band. Cultural and social events are held there each year, including Christmas carol singing in the chapel and a hunters’ ball. If you are planning your trip around one of these events, check the date in advance.
