Slavonice: Churches, Town Tower and Underground Passages

Slavonice begins with a building that is among the oldest in the town: the Church of „Božího Těla a sv. Ducha“. Culture

A Lutheran place of worship in House No. 517 dates from the 16th century and is decorated with murals depicting scenes from the Apocalypse. The town museum is located in House No. 476 on Míru Square; the ground floor of the same building also houses the tourist information centre.

The stone town tower was built in the first half of the 16th century next to the Church of Nanebevzetí Panny Marie. It is open to the public; 144 stone and 32 wooden steps lead to the viewing platform.

History

The Slavonice fortification area illustrates part of the defensive line of the Czechoslovak Republic, which was built between 1935 and 1938. Five reconstructed structures in the fortification area are open to the public when the operator is present and are equipped with period equipment and armaments.

On the first Saturday of August each year, the public battle re-enactment „Přepadení řopíků 1938“ regularly takes place in the Slavonice fortification area from 2 p.m.

Slavonické podzemí can also be explored on guided tours. It offers two routes: a shorter 136-metre route lasting approximately 30 minutes and a longer, more challenging 380-metre route lasting approximately 60 minutes. The shorter route is illuminated and includes three stops with explanations provided by a guide.
