When looking for a hotel in Strakonice District, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: museums and castle history, traditional crafts, parkland, or cycling and leisure activities. The sights and activities offer different experiences. You can plan your trip around the topics that interest you most.

Culture, history and crafts

The museum in Strakonice has exhibitions on bagpipes, textile production, weapons, ČZ motorcycles, puppets and the Order of Malta. It has the largest collection of bagpipes in Central Europe. The Museum of Middle Otava also runs permanent exhibitions at Strakonice Castle. Lectures, exhibitions, and cultural and social events are also held in the historic halls and courtyard. If you want to plan your visit around a particular event, check the dates in advance.

The Radomyšl Museum offers another way to explore regional history: it is housed in a medieval curia that preserves the remains of a former fortress. The fortress dates back approximately to the 13th and 14th centuries. The site combines a museum visit with a historic building whose present-day form reflects the curia’s former use.

Mills, castles and parks

The Hoslovice Water Mill is considered the oldest and uniquely preserved water mill in Bohemia. The visitor programme includes children’s activities, demonstrations of traditional crafts and tastings of traditional food. From the village car park, an approximately two-kilometre paved footpath leads to the mill; it can also be reached by bicycle and with a pushchair. Check the path conditions before your visit. The route and activities give you different options for fitting a visit to the mill into your day.

Streams, bridges, paths and avenues shape the landscape of Blatná Castle Park. Fallow deer graze freely there, and there is also a group of peacocks. A visit therefore brings together landscaped features and animals that can be seen in the park. Lnáře Castle offers a different focus, with decorated interiors, a garden lapidarium, a cat museum and a fishing exhibition. The castle garden has a mini-golf course, tennis courts and a swimming pool. Check whether these facilities are open seasonally before your visit.

Lace from Sedlice is also part of the region’s craft tradition: it is considered a traditional product of the Prácheň region. A shop run by Sedlická krajka displays lace products and sells tools for lace-making. Courses for children and adults are also available. If a course is important to your trip, ask in advance about the dates currently on offer.

Cycling, views and relaxation

The marked Otavská cycling route can be reached by car or bus; public transport is available for the return journey. This makes both getting there and returning important points to consider when planning. In Strakonice, Podskalí is an urban recreation area with a cycle path, playground, fishing opportunities and a boat camp. These activities offer a different focus from the collections and historic buildings.

The 50-metre-high Hoslovice observation tower offers views towards Šumava, Boubín, Bobík, Javorník and Temelín. At Helfenburk Castle, a free car park is located less than a kilometre below the castle; the access road through the forest is paved. Check conditions before setting out. Together with the cycle path, observation tower and recreational facilities at Podskalí, these offer different ways to shape your trip beyond culture and crafts.
