Temešvár lies on the left bank of the Vltava by the Orlík Reservoir. Bronze Age finds and activities on the water offer further ways to explore its story. You can get to know Temešvár according to your interests, through its landscape, the bridge, or its historical traces.
Location by the water and getting around
Its location on the left bank of the Vltava by the Orlík Reservoir provides a clear geographical reference point. Another is the tourist route that crosses Temešvár from north to south. This gives you both the village’s position by the water and a specific route through it to help plan your trip.
Temešvár lies on the state road from Písek to Tábor, just before Podolský Bridge. The bridge itself is located between Podolí and Temešvár on Road 29, which connects Tábor and Písek.
Podolský Bridge: structure and history
The present-day Podolský Bridge was built between 1939 and 1943. It is 510 metres long, and its roadway is 65 metres above the river. These figures describe two different measurements: 510 metres is the length of the structure, while 65 metres is the height of the roadway above the water. This gives you a concrete sense of the bridge’s scale. It was also the American position located farthest behind the demarcation line.
Settlement history and earlier traces
Temešvár originated at the site of a manor farm. The settlement was initially called Nová Ves; later, it was named Temešvár after the Romanian city of the same name, where Austrian troops defeated the Turkish army. The name thus points beyond the village’s own history to the Romanian city and the event associated with it.
The forest of Sloupovna, in the cadastral area of Temešvár, offers a glimpse into an even older period: several deposits of Bronze Age artefacts were discovered there. Bronze bracelets from Temešvár are on display in the permanent exhibition at the Prácheň Museum in Písek. As museum displays can change, check before your visit whether the bracelets are still on show.
Activities at the Orlík Reservoir
Water sports are possible at the Orlík Reservoir near Temešvár. Local boat services also operate on the reservoir and are available to tourists. Water sports and a boat trip are different ways to include the water in your visit. If you are planning a boat trip, check the schedules separately.
In the cadastral area, “Stará cesta” runs past the campsite and down to the water. There is also a spot designated for anglers with disabilities. If you want to access the water or use the fishing spot, check local access conditions before your visit, as they may change.
