Travelers looking for a hotel for a trip to Val can get a sense of the destination through three specific highlights: river landscape, protected nature and historic townscape. Val lies on the Nežárka at the northwestern edge of the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area. These features offer different points of interest for planning your trip – from natural areas to the town’s preserved built environment.

River Landscape and Protected Nature

Among Val’s most important natural features are the undeveloped floodplain of the Lužnice and Nežárka rivers and the Nadějská system of ponds. The European protected area includes the cadastral area of Val u Veselí nad Lužnicí. Its conservation objectives include depressions formed by peat subsoil and habitats of the marsh fritillary and the Eurasian otter. The V Luhu Nature Reserve is also located in the cadastral area of Val u Veselí nad Lužnicí. It protects an oak forest ecosystem with preserved former river channels and floodplain pools. River floodplains, depressions and former river channels thus illustrate different aspects of the protected landscape.

During the spring and autumn migrations, waterbirds regularly congregate in the Rod Nature Reserve; in winter, the area is a regular haunt of white-tailed eagles. The southern and western shores of Rod are open to the public via the pond embankments. The season makes a tangible difference here: the waterbird gatherings mentioned occur during migration periods, while white-tailed eagles are regularly in the area in winter.

Historic Town Center and Chapels

The layout and building forms of the farmsteads have been preserved in the historic town center. Characteristic features include farmsteads with gables facing the street and houses around a pond. To the north, a continuous row of buildings lines both sides of the street, with their gables also facing the street. The townscape can therefore be understood not only through individual buildings but also through the arrangement of the farmsteads and houses. The term “gable-fronted” describes houses whose gable end – the usually triangular wall at the end of the roof – faces the street. This refers to a specific building orientation, while houses around a pond describes their arrangement in the town center.

Val’s architectural heritage includes the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk and the Chapel of Saint Wenceslas in the meadows. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk is listed in the state register of cultural monuments. This year is a point of reference in the town’s history; it does not automatically indicate a foundation date.

Cycling and Paddling

The flat landscape of the Třeboň Basin, with its forests and ponds, is well suited to cycling excursions, including in hot weather. People paddle on the Nežárka when water levels are good. Different conditions matter when choosing between these activities: water levels are decisive for paddling, while the description of the cycling landscape explicitly takes hot weather into account.
