When looking for a hotel in Horusice, it is worth considering the different themes that can shape a trip: the listed chapel in the centre, nature around Horusický rybník and the Horusická blata nature reserve, as well as Veselské pískovny with its 8 km circular trail. This makes it possible to consider culture, bodies of water and a specific walking route as separate points of interest.

Nature and Waterbirds

The Horusická blata nature reserve is a breeding area for many protected waterbirds. It protects shoreline vegetation, including reed and bulrush stands, willow thickets, transition bogs and sedge meadows on the western shore of Horusický rybník and in its floodplain. The information about the reserve therefore covers both shoreline areas and wet meadow and bog habitats.

Horusický rybník is an important year-round resting place for migrating waterbirds, particularly in spring and autumn. The two nature areas have different roles: Horusická blata is significant as a breeding area, while the pond serves as a year-round resting place for migratory birds. For nature enthusiasts, this distinction helps explain the different functions of the reserve and the body of water, without reducing them to the same kind of observation or season.

Lake Landscape and History

Veselské pískovny comprises five gravel lakes with a total area of 240 hectares. They were formed by gravel extraction, which took place from 1952 to 1986. The lakes lie between Veselí nad Lužnicí, Horusice and Vlkov in the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area and Biosphere Reserve. Their origin sets them apart from Horusický rybník, whose history dates back further.

Horusický rybník was established in 1512 on the Bukovský potok, based on a design by Štěpánek Netolický. The village of Oslov previously stood on the site. The histories of the two waterside landscapes therefore have different focuses: the pond’s creation in the early 16th century, and the gravel extraction that gave rise to the five lakes. This historical context offers a concrete way to understand the landscape and how it came about.

Circular Trail at Veselské pískovny

The Naučná stezka Veselské pískovny is an 8 km circular trail along the shores of two lakes. Along the way, it covers local fauna and flora, sand and gravel extraction, and the area’s geological features. These topics bring together natural history, the history of land use and the area’s geological structure.

A visit to the trail is recommended year-round. Even so, check seasonal conditions before setting out. Veselské pískovny can be reached by car, bicycle or on foot; here too, it is advisable to check local conditions before travelling.

Chapel and Practical Information

In the centre of Horusice, the listed chapel stands on the village green as a local landmark. It adds a distinct cultural point of interest right in the village centre to the nature and waterside themes. Alongside nature reserves and a circular trail, Horusice therefore offers a specific feature of the village itself to consider when planning your trip.

There is a snack stand at Veselské pískovny, open depending on the weather and serving drinks and food. As its opening depends on the weather and the season, it is best to check the latest details before setting out. This lets you plan your visit to the lakes and circular trail without assuming the snack stand will be open year-round.
