Vlhlavy brings together a village square with a chapel, rural Baroque architecture, medieval local history, and Vlhlavský Pond. There are also cycling routes that include the village as a stop or pass through it. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether architectural history, the landscape, or cycling should shape your stay.

The Chapel and Rural Baroque Architecture

The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk stands on the village square, opposite Farmhouse No. 5. The chapel portal is dated 1841. Inside is a polychrome statue of St. John of Nepomuk. These details offer different points of reference for the chapel: its place in the village, a dated architectural feature, and a colorfully painted figure inside.

Farmhouse No. 5 is considered the best-preserved example of rural Baroque architecture in Vlhlavy. Its gables are in the Blata style and painted with St. Wenceslas and St. Florian. Vlhlavy also has a number of other rural Baroque farmhouses. This means that the architectural theme is not limited to a single building: Farmhouse No. 5 provides a specific example, while the other farmhouses add to the village’s architectural character.

Historic Traces in the Village

The first written mention of Vlhlavy dates from 1273. This is distinct from the probable dating of the village’s history back to the Neolithic period, more than 7,000 years ago. The written record and this earlier, explicitly probable dating represent different time horizons.

Another turning point concerns the former fortress of Vlhlavy. In the autumn of 1420, it was captured and burned down by the Hussites under Jan Hrůza of Vlhlavy. Earthwork traces of the ditches remain. The village’s history thus brings together an early written mention, a possible history reaching much further back, and a specific event from the Middle Ages.

Fishpond Landscape and Natural Environment

Vlhlavský Pond was created in 1387–1388. It is one of the five largest ponds in the Budějovice-Hluboká pond system and one of the ten oldest ponds in South Bohemia. Its date of origin and its ranking by size and age give the pond a clear connection to the history of the fishpond landscape.

The Vlhlavy area is part of the Českobudějovické rybníky Bird Protection Area. The Velký Karasín Natural Monument is also nearby. For nature-focused trip planning, this gives you two distinct regional points of interest: the pond system and protected area on the one hand, and the nearby natural monument on the other.

Cycling Routes with Vlhlavy as a Stop

The approximately 25-kilometer cycling excursion “Na Zbudovská blata za selským barokem” (To the Zbudovská Blata for Rural Baroque) runs mainly along signposted cycle paths and includes Vlhlavy as a stop. Another option is the family-friendly, approximately 24-kilometer circular route “Za památkami a přírodou Zbudovských Blat” (Exploring the Monuments and Nature of the Zbudovská Blata). It follows existing cycle routes 1085, 1083, 1084, and 1081 and also includes Vlhlavy as a stop.

The two rides are similar in length but differ in the features described: the first emphasizes predominantly signposted cycle paths, while the second is a circular route identified by four cycle route numbers. Cycle Route No. 1083 also passes through Vlhlavy. Check the local signage for the circular route before setting out. This lets you choose between a ride focused on signposted paths and a route explicitly designated as a loop.

You can choose from several different focuses when deciding where to stay: the chapel and rural Baroque farmhouses, the history of the former fortress, or the area’s fishponds and cycling routes. If Vlhlavy fits your travel plans, you can then look for a hotel for your stay.
