Zahrádky: Cultural History and Walks
Accommodation in Zahrádky
Zahrádky combines public art, architectural history, and walks with specific connections to ponds and waterways. When planning a stay, these themes can be considered separately: sculptures, a fountain, a sundial, and a church shape the cultural perspective in the village; on walks, destinations, markers, and bodies of water provide orientation. This can help you decide whether history and the village’s appearance or a particular route description should play a greater role in your visit.
Art and Architectural History
The sculptures in the village were created at the International Woodcarving Symposium Zahrádky 2000. A stone fountain stands in a central public square; since 2003, a walk-on stone sundial has been located in front of the municipal building. The Protestant church adds an architectural history to these public landmarks: construction began in 1901 and was completed in 1903. The sculptures created at the symposium and the church’s construction therefore belong to different historical contexts. The sundial also combines stone design with a walk-on feature in the village landscape.
Historical Significance of the Route
Umrlčí cesta was once the route taken by funeral processions from Zahrádky to the cemetery in Palupín; this is the origin of its name. This historical connection makes the route’s name part of the village’s history and points to an earlier link between the village and the cemetery.
Pond and Mill Landscape
Korytník Pond lies above Skuhrův mlýn mill in Zahrádky. The mill was probably a manorial mill and belonged to the Jindřichův Hradec estate. The pond and mill offer two different ways of experiencing the landscape: the location of the water describes the terrain, while the mill’s probable function and its belonging to the estate establish a historical context. For travelers interested in past economic conditions as well as the waterside landscape, the mill adds another perspective to the pond.
Walks and Getting Around
A southern walk starts at the Na Šafranici bus stop and follows a green-marked hiking route to Palupín. A walk from Zahrádky to Horní Dvorce crosses the Hamerský potok before it flows into Dvorecký rybník. A walk in Zahrádky leads close to the biocorridor along the Hamerský potok. These route descriptions use different points of reference: the start and destination of the southern walk, a water crossing on the way to Horní Dvorce, and the biocorridor as a landscape feature.
These themes offer different considerations when choosing a stay. Those mainly interested in local history can find points of interest at the church, Umrlčí cesta, and the mill. For walks, the destinations, markers, and bodies of water mentioned above can be helpful.
