Šanov: Discover cycling routes, nature and culture
Accommodation in Šanov
If you are looking for a hotel in Šanov, the focus of your trip can be a helpful starting point. Cycling routes, a protected woodland landscape, cultural and historical connections, and a sports hall all contribute to the local character. The routes vary in length and destination; the historical significance of Emin zámek and its current accessibility should be considered separately.
Choose cycling routes by length and destination
The Muchova cyklostezka is a 20 km circular route. It leads to places of historical, architectural and ecological interest in the cadastral area of Šanov and the surrounding area. It is also connected to important regional cycling routes and trails. This offers an opportunity to explore both the circular route itself and its links to the regional cycling network.
Two shorter loops are also useful for comparing route lengths: the Karlovský poznávací okruh is 4.3 km long, while the large circular educational trail through Údolím lásky is 5.4 km long. Both are shorter than the 20 km Muchova cyklostezka; the difference between the two shorter routes is 1.1 km. This makes it possible to compare their lengths precisely without treating their different destinations as equivalent.
Karlov: ponds, valley and woodland landscape
The Karlovský poznávací okruh leads to the dam of the Horní Karlov pond. From there, you can observe the landscape of the Příční potok valley and the waters of both ponds. At the opposite end of the dam is an observation hide, which can be used to watch the local wildlife without disturbing it. The route thus connects a specific waterside location with a view of the valley.
The circular educational trail through Údolím lásky reaches the edge of the Karlov Nature Reserve (přírodní rezervace Karlov). The protected area preserves a remnant of natural oak woods and a hornbeam-maple forest; extensive black locust stands surround the woodland. The two shorter routes have different focuses: the Karlovský route centres on the dam, ponds and valley, while the educational trail leads to the edge of the protected area.
Cultural history and current accessibility
Emin zámek was built in 1882 by Eduard Khuen-Belassy for his wife, Emanuela Khuen-Belassy, and was originally called Emin dvůr. The young painter Alfons Mucha contributed to the decoration of some of its interior rooms. The year it was built, its patron and its artistic decoration give the château a specific cultural and historical significance. Its current use is also important for planning a visit: Emin zámek currently houses a social care facility and is therefore not open to the public.
Sports and spring festival
The Šanov Sports Centre has an indoor sports hall for futsal, basketball, floorball, tennis, volleyball, nohejbal and aerobics. Alongside cycling routes, various indoor sports are therefore part of the town’s sporting profile.
Since 2009, Šanov has regularly held the small spring festival Otvírání studánky. The programme also includes a bike ride to the Karlov Nature Reserve (přírodní rezervace Karlov). If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the date for your planned visit in advance.
