In Znojmo District, Podyjí reveals a landscape where the Dyje winds in curves past rocks, vineyards, flower-filled meadows and sunlit orchards. Wine routes and places where natural and regional history can be experienced in different ways complete the picture. You can shape your trip around the landscapes, sights and activities that interest you most.

River Valley and Nature in Podyjí

Podyjí National Park lies on the Austrian border, where it connects with Thayatal National Park. It protects an exceptionally well-preserved river valley in a forested landscape. The Dyje has carved a deep canyon surrounded by a high plateau. Biogeographically, Podyjí lies at the transition between the Hercynian and Pannonian regions.

Forest habitats include extensive oak-hornbeam forests, ravine forests and thermophilous oak forests. More than 20 viewpoints help visitors take in the landscape; Sealsfieldův kámen sits above a bend in the river. Marked hiking trails offer opportunities to spot rare plants and animals. Butterflies in the Fládnitzké Moor and bats near the ruins of Nový Hradek may also be highlights of a hike. The nature trails also include a climb to Vraní skála.

Wine Routes and Excursions

The Znojemská vinařská stezka is 189 kilometres long and connects 55 wine-growing villages. Its stops include the Malovaný sklep in Šatov and sites of military history such as Bunkr Na Hrázi and bunker MJ–S 3 “Zahrada”. The Malovaný sklep itself contains relief-like fantasy images by local artist Maxmillian Appeltauer. The Šobes vineyard is another special highlight for wine lovers: it lies in a bend of the Dyje in Podyjí and offers seasonal wine tastings. Check availability before your trip.

In Vrbovec, the informative Hroznové kozy wine trail introduces visitors to wine traditions and local legends on an easy circular route. The route is considered suitable for families. Those who want to explore by bike can take the Znojmo–Chvalovice cycle route: it connects Znojmo with Nový Šaldorf, Vrbovec and Chvalovice, and runs away from a busy road towards the Austrian border. As route conditions can change, it is advisable to check before setting out.

Castles, Mills and History

Bítov Castle stands on a narrow rocky outcrop about 70 metres above the Želetavka. The visitor tour includes a Neo-Gothic chapel with the Madonna of Bítov, dated to 1334, as well as a zoo with a restored animal collection associated with Baron Jiří Haas. The combination of its striking location and these attractions makes the tour a highlight in its own right for those interested in culture.

The watermill in Slup also brings together hands-on technology and history: it has four working waterwheels and a millrace, and explains the history of milling from prehistoric times to the present day. For a different historical perspective, visit the Iron Curtain memorial in Čížov, which covers important periods and moments in 20th-century Czech history.

Underground Znojmo and Travel Planning

Znojemské podzemí takes visitors on atmospheric tours through medieval passageways, cellars and shelters beneath the historic centre of Znojmo. One route includes a Jesuit aqueduct, large underground halls, smoke vents and exhibitions on archaeology and wine-growing. Another leads to a medieval well and through original passageways cut into the rock; it also features an exhibition on the history of the underground. Tour formats and access can change, so check the current options before your visit.

Loucký Monastery is the starting point for the Znojemský tourist train, which connects Louka with the historic centre of Znojmo. As timetables and services can change, it is worth checking the latest times when planning your trip.
