Šardice: Winegrowing and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Šardice
Šardice offers several highlights to consider when planning a trip: church and village history, winegrowing, and routes associated with the town. If you are looking for a hotel in Šardice, these themes can help you decide what you would like to explore during your stay. The historic sites tell stories of different eras, while each route has its own name and course.
Churches, a Residence, and Village Life
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel is early Baroque and stands on older Gothic foundations. It acquired its present form during a renovation in the 18th century. A massive, square, seven-story tower stands on the west façade. The church thus reveals two distinct phases of construction: the older Gothic foundations and the later redesign.
The Augustinian Residence was built between 1740 and 1742 on the site of an older granary. Abbot Johann Gregor Mendel, described as the founder of genetics, spent the summer months there. The building thus connects a specific chapter of local history from the 18th century with Mendel’s stay. The residence currently houses a permanent exhibition of measuring instruments and scales, a farmhouse room, a folk costume exhibition, a ceremonial hall, concert and lecture halls, exhibition rooms, and an information center. Check access arrangements before visiting.
On the edge of the town stands the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, built and consecrated in 2015 along the Šardice–Hovorany cycling route. Its statue was originally installed in the chapel of the former summer residence of the Brno Augustinians. The connection to the history of the residence is thus also reflected in a single work of art.
Chalúpka No. 97 adds the theme of village life to the historic buildings. This former farmstead is the oldest documented building in Šardice. Since June 1, 2019, it has been open as a museum of village life from a hundred years ago. Visits are possible year-round by telephone appointment with the owner at 603 878 007; arrange your specific visit in advance by phone.
Winegrowing and Regional Insights
Loyderův sklep is a preserved wine cellar building with a press house dating from 1745. The building houses an exhibition about winegrowing and mining. Check in advance what the exhibition currently covers. Tours can be arranged by telephone at 518 624 525 or 734 203 090, or in person at the municipal office in Šardice. Both the building itself and the exhibition are part of the visit.
Šardice is part of the Slovácká wine-growing region. The Moravian-Slovak Wine Route passes through Čejč, Hovorany, Karlín, and Šardice. Along this route, you can learn more about individual grape varieties. The regional setting and the opportunity to learn about grape varieties provide two distinct points of reference for winegrowing here: the landscape region and knowledge of the vines.
For tourist information about Šardice and the surrounding area, the information center provides details on bus and train connections, trip suggestions, as well as maps and guidebooks. These services can help you prepare if you are planning a journey or an outing. Check opening hours and available services before visiting.
Cycling Route, Viewpoint, and Landscape
The 65-kilometer Mutěnická cycling route passes through Šardice. After short climbs with a maximum elevation gain of 100 meters, the route offers sweeping views. Another stop with its own connection to the landscape is the Soudek viewpoint: it was established in 2017 in the Požární čtvrtě vineyard area as a place for passive recreation and is located on the Mutěnická Wine Route. When planning, note the different names: the cycling route passes through Šardice, while Soudek is on the wine route.
Photography is also part of the town’s landscape appeal. Several of the most beautiful photo spots in Moravian Tuscany are located within the cadastral area of Šardice. Together with the historic buildings and winegrowing connections, this gives you a choice between architectural history, village life, and landscape—without combining these different highlights into a single route.
