Babice Nad Svitavou: Church, Views and Karst
Accommodation in Babice Nad Svitavou
Babice Nad Svitavou brings together historic buildings and a landscape of limestone and karst. The Church of St. John the Baptist and the Alexandrova rozhledna add their own historical highlights; natural areas and geological sites offer another perspective on the town. For your trip, you can choose between local history, views and karst features.
Church and local history
The Church of St. John the Baptist dates from 1448. Its core is Gothic; it was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1765. Since 1996, the church has been listed as an immovable cultural monument in the Brno-venkov District, with registration number 0643. The town’s history also has an early milestone: Babice Nad Svitavou was first mentioned in writing in 1365.
The dates therefore mark different chapters: 1365 for the town’s first written mention, 1448 for the church and 1765 for its Baroque renovation. If you are interested in history, this makes it possible to distinguish the town’s development from the history of the church building.
Observation tower and trails
The stone Alexandrova rozhledna replaced a wooden viewing pavilion in 1887. The observation tower is open year-round free of charge; check local conditions before your visit. From Babice Nad Svitavou, a green-marked gravel path leads directly to the tower. Another landmark is Srnčà studánka: a blue-marked hiking trail leads there along the edge of the Čihadlo Nature Reserve.
The trails are easy to distinguish by their stated destinations: the green-marked gravel path leads to the observation tower, while the blue-marked hiking trail leads to the spring at the edge of the protected area. You can choose accordingly, depending on whether the tower or Srnčà studánka is your intended destination. For both trails, take local conditions into account before setting out.
Forest, limestone and karst
The ÄŚihadlo Nature Reserve protects natural deciduous forests on Devonian limestone and loess deposits, as well as surface and underground karst features. From the higher rocks at the ÄŚihadlo geological site, you can enjoy views of the relief of the Brno Massif and the Svitava Valley. Landscape and views go hand in hand here: the view extends across the terrain, while the protected features also include the bedrock and forest areas.
A hiking trail from the Kanice–Babice road passes through limestone to the Babická plošina; the Čihadlo geological site can be reached via this trail. The Babická plošina lies in the central part of the Moravian Karst, covers about nine square kilometres and is located at an average elevation of around 500 metres above sea level. About 20 caves are known on the plateau. The area, elevation and number of caves give you different points of reference for the landscape: the extent of the plateau, its elevation above sea level and the underground karst world.
Malá Macocha: karst and mining history
Malá Macocha lies on the northwestern edge of Babice Nad Svitavou. It is a significant palaeokarst site and a disused iron ore mine. Today it consists of three connected depressions about eight metres deep. The mine was excavated through several relatively narrow vertical shafts to a depth of about 42 metres. The two measurements describe different features: the depth of the depressions and the depth of the mining excavation. Together, they show that Malá Macocha is both a karst site and a record of former ore mining.
If you are choosing where to stay with a focus on landscape and culture, the church, observation tower and the karst features described here offer different themes to consider when planning your trip. Check local conditions before visiting the observation tower, and use the respective destinations to guide you on the hiking trails.
