Blížkovice offers several points of interest for a stay: the architectural history of the Church of St. Bartholomew, a cycling route that passes through the town and a long local history. References to guilds, a brewery and fishpond farming add to the picture. This helps you decide whether you are most interested in church architecture, local history or cycling.

The Church of St. Bartholomew

The Church of St. Bartholomew in Blížkovice has a Romanesque core dating from the early 13th century. A Gothic presbytery with a sacristy and charnel house was probably added in the first quarter of the 14th century. The presbytery is the chancel of the church. The church interior also includes a late Renaissance stone baptismal font. Its lid bears a wood carving of the Baptism of Christ from the late 18th century.

The dates refer to different parts and periods: the oldest core, the Gothic elements that were probably added, and the later carving on the baptismal font’s lid. The building history and furnishings can therefore be considered separately, without combining the different dates into a single year of construction. For travellers interested in sacred architecture, the church offers several specific points of interest from different centuries.

Cycling through Blížkovice

The 84-kilometre Živé pomezí Krumlovsko–Jevišovicko cycling route passes through Blížkovice. It largely avoids busy roads and runs through hilly terrain; some sections offer views over the open countryside. The length and route description provide different reference points for planning: 84 kilometres describes the overall distance, while the hills and scenic stretches illustrate the character of the route.

Along the western edge of the South Moravian Region, the route connects the Greenway corridors Praha–Wien (No. 48) and Krakow–Morava–Wien (No. 4). It therefore extends beyond Blížkovice and places the passage through the town within a regional network of routes. When planning your trip, you can take into account both the local connection and the link between the two named corridors.

Local history and traditions

Blížkovice is documented as a market town from 1349. The Panská hospoda on the market square was the seat of eight guilds. These details add two further perspectives to the history of the parish church: the early record of Blížkovice as a market town and the connection between a particular inn and the guild system.

Older forms of economic activity are also part of the town’s history. Blížkovice had a brewery; hops were apparently also grown in the field behind the church, known as Chmelenec. The town also had a comparatively extensive system of fishponds.

In its 2023 event list, the municipality described Blížkovické posvícení as a traditional festival with an extensive cultural and sports programme. The specific events vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the date and current programme.
