Discover Dolní Dubňany
Accommodation in Dolní Dubňany
Dolní Dubňany brings together landscapes, history and local traditions. The municipality lies in the Znojemská pahorkatina between the catchment areas of the Rokytná and Jihlava rivers. This gives you several distinct themes to explore when planning your trip: observing nature in spring, marked cycling routes, archaeological traces and folk culture that can be traced through specific historical milestones.
Landscape and protected nature
The Široký natural monument covers 0.6515 hectares. It protects narrow-leaved dry grasslands with large-flowered pasqueflower (Pulsatilla grandis), Bohemian star-of-Bethlehem (Gagea bohemica) and other rare, in some cases specially protected, plant and animal species. The Ve Žlebě natural monument is larger in area, at 2.4831 hectares, and overlaps with the Natura 2000 site of Community importance CZ0622161. The two areas therefore differ both in size and in the specific protection designations described.
The spring landscape also plays a role in the area around Dolní Dubňany: walks can lead to slopes where rare pasqueflowers grow, especially near the Dolnodubňanská reservoir, known as “Balaton.” This seasonal observation is a different nature-related feature from the protected areas described above.
Marked cycling routes and regional orientation
Marked cycle route No. 401 passes through Dolní Dubňany, following the Moravský Krumlov–Horní Dubňany route towards Třebíč. The Mlynářská stezka is another marked cycling route that runs through the municipality between Nové Město na Moravě and Hardegg. These routes provide different regional connections; no information about their length or cycling time is specified.
Dolní Dubňany is in the South Moravian Region (Jihomoravský kraj), roughly halfway between Brno and Znojmo. This gives you a sense of the town’s place in the region, while the routes and nature themes describe specific points of interest in the town and its surroundings.
Church and archaeological history
The Church of St. Wenceslas in Dolní Dubňany dates from the mid-13th century. The area around the church is an archaeological area classified as ÚAN I. Its finds and traces of settlement include examples from the Linear Pottery culture, the Bell Beaker culture and the Únětice culture, as well as from the Middle Ages through to modern times. The church’s medieval date thus sits alongside a much longer archaeological timeline.
Folk costume and local customs
The folk costume from Dolní Dubňany is considered a basic example of costumes from the Moravskokrumlovsko area and is classified as the West Moravian type. Its revival can be traced through two dated milestones: Following the traditional Václavské hody celebrations in 2023, the local Chasa initiated the restoration of the costume, which had not been renewed for 170 years. At the Václavské hody celebrations in 2024, the first two couples wearing the renewed Dolní Dubňany folk costume were presented.
A 2024 account mentions local folk songs that are still sung in Dolní Dubňany and the so-called Kloboukový obřad (Hat Ceremony), a tradition that continues to be maintained. Another traditional spring custom revolved around the “Smrtolka”: a girl carried the figure, wrapped in a feather bed, while the other girls followed, sang and moved it in rhythm as it was decorated. At each house, the girls buried the Smrtolka in the feather bed to welcome spring.
If you are looking for a hotel in Dolní Dubňany, you can plan your trip around these seasonal and historical milestones: pasqueflowers are specifically associated with spring, the history of the folk costume is linked to events in 2023 and 2024, and the church dates from the mid-13th century. Nature observation, the recent revival of traditions and medieval history thus offer different points of interest for your stay.
