Dyjákovice: Cycling Route, Thaya and Sacred Buildings
Accommodation in Dyjákovice
Dyjákovice brings together a cycling route on the southwestern edge of the town and the Thaya, as well as sacred buildings and military history. If you are looking for a hotel in Dyjákovice, these highlights can help you decide what you want your stay to focus on.
Cycling Route and Water
A signposted cycling route runs along the Krhovice–Hevlín Canal on the southwestern edge of Dyjákovice. Its route designations include 48, EV13, Greenway P-W, Moravská vinná and Po rovince. The Po rovince route has an easy, flat profile; 80 percent of the route runs along local roads without road traffic. The designations, profile and proportion without road traffic provide different information about the route: the names identify the route, while the other details describe its character.
The Thaya flows through Dyjákovice and also feeds the irrigation canal to Hevlín. The river’s course through the town and the canal’s function as an irrigation channel are two specific ways in which water is connected to the town.
Churches, Chapels and Small Monuments
The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes stands on the eastern edge of the town. It has a single-nave main hall, a polygonal chancel and a tower above the western entrance. “Single-nave” describes the layout of the main hall; the chancel has several sides. The chapel was built in 1885 on the site of an older Marian chapel called “Frauenbild” and extensively restored in 1984.
The Church of St Michael the Archangel in Dyjákovice is a late Baroque church dating from 1757 to 1761. A Calvary group stands in the former cemetery beside the north wall of the parish church. At its centre is a monumental Neoclassical cemetery cross. The parish church thus provides a way to place both its construction period and a distinctive feature of the former cemetery in context.
The Chapel of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, also stands on the western edge of the town. This small sacred building dates from 1886. A stone wayside shrine dating from the 16th century is one of the late Gothic pre-Reformation small monuments located outdoors. Together with the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes and the Church of St Michael, these buildings offer different points of interest for a tour focused on sacred architecture.
The centre of Dyjákovice, including the Church of St Michael, is an area with documented or reasonably suspected archaeological finds. The town’s history therefore also includes archaeological evidence that goes beyond its visible buildings.
Military History and Church Events
There are more than 30 military fortifications in the area around Dyjákovice. The nearby MJ-S 15 “Závora” infantry blockhouse has a modernised filtering and ventilation system, fully equipped cupolas and an original pump.
