The Dyje River flows through the municipality of Dyje. South of the village of the same name, towards Tasovice, lies the Dyjské svahy Natural Monument. It is located within the municipality and cadastral area of Dyje, on a rocky, west-facing slope above the river. The area protects plant communities adapted to drought and heat, as well as numerous rare and endangered plant and animal species. The location on the slope and its protected flora and fauna give the river landscape a distinctive focus for planning your trip.

River landscape and the Dyjské svahy Natural Monument

A cycling tour passes through Dyje, crosses the Dyje River there and continues along the opposite bank to the Dyjské svahy Natural Monument. At the protected area, you can leave your bicycles at a shelter and walk a short distance towards the river. This excursion therefore describes both ways of getting around: the cycling tour takes you to the Natural Monument, and from the shelter you continue on foot for a short distance towards the river. If you would rather focus your trip on the landscape, the route and protected area bring together the river, rocky slope and nature watching under one theme.

Wayside shrine, pilgrimage church and castle

North of Dyje, in fields beside a former road to Dobšice, stands the Boží muka wayside shrine, also known as the column of the saints. It is an early Baroque pillar shrine dating from around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. Its design can be seen in several architectural features: a pillar with a cornice stands on a square foundation; the chapel is decorated with shallow reliefs and topped by a concave-curved tent roof. Its location, date and architectural form offer several clues for placing this small structure in context.

Another religious landmark is the late Baroque Church of St. John of Nepomuk, considered an important pilgrimage site. Dyje Baroque Castle was built by the Premonstratensians from Louka between 1768 and 1775. Together with the early Baroque wayside shrine, the church and castle show how the buildings differ not only in function but also in period. If you are interested in architecture, you can make these differences in date and design a focus alongside the river landscape.

Cycling, walking and travel planning

Another historical route connection is the former Svatoklementská stezka. It ran between Hodonice and Znojmo through Tasovice, Dyje and Dobšice, and was suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. The former route is currently considered unmaintained; many of its information boards no longer work or are entirely missing. Its former suitability for walking and cycling therefore says nothing about whether it can be used today. When planning your trip, it is important to distinguish between the described cycling tour to the Natural Monument and this former route, which is currently unmaintained.

Dyje railway stop is on the Znojmo–Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou–Břeclav railway line. If you are including rail travel in your plans, check the timetable for your travel date. When choosing your destination, consider whether you would rather focus on the cycling tour and the Natural Monument or on the religious and Baroque buildings. Search for hotels in Dyje if you would like to look into staying overnight at your destination; the natural and cultural themes described here offer different points of interest for your stay.
