Žatčany combines a protected natural area with local history reflected in its churches, chapel, and historic municipal area. Písky, the educational trail of just under seven kilometres, and the historic monuments each offer a different focus. When planning your trip, you can consider which topics are of particular interest to you during your stay.

Písky: a natural monument with its own character

The Písky Natural Monument is a 2.24-hectare protected area in the cadastral territory of Žatčany. Its open sandy areas originate from oil extraction carried out around 50 to 60 years ago. Individual trees and shrubs are scattered across the site, while denser growth marks its edges. Písky is protected because of its abandoned spoil heaps and waste heaps, and as a habitat for psammophilic flora and fauna. “Psammophilic” describes plants and animals that are associated with sandy habitats; the term highlights the connection between the ground and the protection of the area.

Access is also worth considering when planning your visit: Písky can be reached across pathless terrain, and it is more than 250 metres from the road. Conditions on the ground may vary. Check local conditions before your visit.

The educational trail and other routes

The Žatčany včera a dnes educational trail consists of 15 information boards and forms a circular route of just under 7 kilometres. It is primarily intended for residents, but also offers visitors to the municipality interesting information. The boards and circular route bring together information about Žatčany and a clearly stated route length. This makes the educational trail an option to consider for a stay focused on the municipality, without assuming a particular walking time or level of difficulty.

The Bitva u Slavkova educational trail route also passes through Žatčany. As signs and trail conditions may change, it is worth checking current maps when planning. The Brněnská vinařská cyklostezka also intersects with a locally signposted cycle route in Žatčany. If you plan to use this cycling connection, current cycling maps can help you find your way.

Churches and architectural history

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Žatčany is considered one of the oldest churches in Moravia. A church probably stood here as early as the 12th century; masonry and supporting pillars from this early building phase survive in its foundations. The account of an early church and the surviving structural elements offer two different insights into the town’s architectural history.

The Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene is part of the church complex. It was built in the Baroque style in 1616–1618 and is a protected cultural monument within the complex. Inside are a wooden altar designed as the Holy Sepulchre and an artificial stalactite cave containing a statue of the saint. The chapel thus adds a later Baroque building and distinctive interior features to the early history of the Church of the Holy Trinity.

Historic area and living tradition

Náves is the oldest and largest historic area of the municipality of Žatčany. It is also home to the greatest concentration of monuments and public buildings. If you are interested in the historic townscape, this concentration is a useful reference point for understanding the municipal centre of architectural heritage.

The tradition of Svatomartinské hody, the St. Martin’s feast, is also part of cultural life. It has been observed in Žatčany for around 400 years. The townscape therefore includes not only protected buildings but also a festive custom preserved over a long period. The Slavkovské bojiště Landscape and Heritage Conservation Zone also extends into the cadastral territory of Žatčany, adding a landscape setting to the area’s local natural and historical associations.
