Horní Dunajovice: Culture, Wine and Water
Accommodation in Horní Dunajovice
Several specific interests come together for a trip to Horní Dunajovice: architectural history, wine, nature and swimming. Local attractions range from the parish church and Starý zámek to the nature monument, wine trails and reservoir. You can choose your destination based on the focus you want your stay to have.
Church and architectural history
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Horní Dunajovice was built in 1540. The church tower has the greatest deviation from the vertical per metre in the Czech Republic. This measurement relates the tilt to the height: it is the deviation per metre, not simply a comparison of the total height. Alongside its year of construction, this gives the church a precisely defined distinguishing feature.
Starý zámek can also be understood through its building phases. The Renaissance château probably dates from 1536, when Jindřich Březnický had the former fortress converted into a Renaissance-style château. In the 19th century, Starý zámek was converted into a granary. The former water-fortress building known as Starý zámek is currently not open to the public because of its poor condition. Access arrangements may change after restoration.
Nature monument and reservoir
The protected natural monument Pod Šibeničním kopcem covers 3.5292 ha. Horní Dunajovice Reservoir covers 28 ha and is used for swimming; its beaches are mostly sandy or a mix of sand and gravel. This gives you a clear distinction when choosing what interests you: on one side is the protected natural monument, and on the other, the reservoir used for swimming, with its characteristic beaches.
Wine trails, cellars and tastings
The Znojmo Wine Trail passes through Horní Dunajovice. The VINAŘ loop is 6 km long and suitable for inline skating. This offers different options: a wine trail through the town, and a loop with a specified length that is suitable for inline skating. Horní Dunajovice also has around twenty wine cellars. Some of the cellars in the northern part are excavated in sand and soft loess. This adds a distinctive architectural feature to the wine trail: the cellars and the material in which some of them are dug.
Otevřené sklepy is a wine tasting event in Horní Dunajovice held on the first Saturday in June. Event dates may vary; check the date for your travel year if you plan to attend the tasting.
Pilgrimages in Rybníky
At the pilgrimage site of Panna Maria Lurdská in Rybníky, two pilgrimages are currently held each year: on the last Sunday in May and the first Sunday in September. The two dates offer different times of year to choose from. If you would like to plan your trip around a pilgrimage, you can use these Sundays to choose a suitable travel period.
