Accommodation in Korolupy
Korolupy lies on the right bank of the Blatnice River. Those interested in historic architecture and local history can distinguish the buildings by style, date and former use. The village square and riverside setting also shape the impression of this destination.
Village Square, Memorial and Community Pond
The memorial to those who fell in the First World War stands in the village square beside the church. It dates from 1929. Remains of a former quarry for dark gabbro are also visible in the square. Two different historical traces therefore stand side by side in one place: the commemoration of the fallen and the remains of the land’s former use for gabbro quarrying. The community pond is used for swimming. As conditions can change, it is best to check its current use before going for a swim.
Altán Korolupy: Architecture and Former Use
Altán Korolupy is a brick park pavilion in a landscaped park northeast of Uherčice Castle. The central, tower-like building, which has a cellar, dates from the late 18th century and is late Baroque. It occupies a prominent position in the landscape at the crossing of long paths lined with tree avenues. The pavilion was originally used for hunting and later for meditation. Its individual features answer different questions: the period places the architecture in context, the tower-like form and cellar describe the structure, and hunting and meditation describe its former use.
Distinguishing the Church and Chapels
The parish Church of St Lawrence is a late Baroque church dating from the second half of the 18th century. It has been a protected cultural monument since 1958. Services are held there regularly. If you would like to attend, check the date in advance, as service schedules can change. The small Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows (Kaple P.Marie Bolestné), in the late Empire style, stands on the road to Vysočany. The wayside chapel (Kaplička) on the road towards Uherčice is late Neoclassical and dates from the second half of the 19th century.
For comparison, it is worth distinguishing style, form and use. “Late Baroque” places Altán and the parish church in a particular period, while the pavilion’s tower-like shape and cellar are specific structural features. Hunting and meditation describe its former use. The chapels have different styles: late Empire for the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows and late Neoclassical for the wayside chapel. This makes it possible to consider the village’s appearance according to several criteria, not just the age of its buildings.
Leisure Activities and a Visit to the Mill
The forests around Korolupy offer opportunities for mushroom picking. This activity is seasonal, and access conditions may vary. The community pond is used for swimming; as conditions may change here too, it is best to check its current use before going for a swim. The buildings give the destination a cultural and historical focus, while swimming and mushroom picking appeal to other interests that depend more on conditions and the season.
The surviving Korolupský mlýn stands west of Korolupy in an isolated location. If you are considering a visit, check access in advance.
