A clear cultural and historical highlight in Kuželov is the windmill, a national cultural monument. There is also an annual concert and trails in the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. Depending on whether you are interested in architectural history, a concert date, or a trail, you can include different aspects of the town in your travel plans.

The Windmill: Design and History

The windmill in Kuželov was built in 1842 and is a Dutch-type windmill. Its rotating wooden roof sits on a solid stone structure. This makes the fixed body of the building and the movable roof stand out as distinct parts of the construction. With its construction date and clearly described design, the monument combines a specific historical date with distinctive architecture.

The original equipment has also been preserved and extends across three floors. Thus, in addition to its exterior, the mill includes historic fittings distributed across several levels. The windmill complex also includes a visitor center in a historic barn building. The mill and barn therefore together form the named complex.

Concert and Trails around Kuželov

Since 1992, the closing concert of Horňácké slavnosti has been held at the windmill every year. The recurring concert offers a possible event focus for your trip in addition to visiting the historic building. If you would like to travel for the concert, check the dates of the relevant Horňácké slavnosti when planning your trip.

From Velká nad Veličkou, you can walk about 4 km along the green-marked trail to the windmill or take the bus to Kuželov. For this journey, you can therefore choose between a walk of approximately the stated distance and a bus connection to Kuželov.

One trail leads through the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area back to the windmill. At the broader area level, most of Kuželov’s cadastral area also lies within the protected landscape area. The two statements therefore refer to different spatial scales: a specific trail and the greater part of the cadastral area.

Further Historical Traces

The three stones known as Tři kameny point to a different kind of history than the windmill. On a historic road to Hungary, they marked the former border between the estates of the Liechtensteins, the Magnis family, and Hungary. Here, the focus is on a former boundary and a historic route, rather than the design of a single building.

Kuželov is also home to the Church of the Most Holy Trinity. The church is High Baroque and dates from 1718; its tower dates from 1770. The two dates thus refer to different parts of the building. Along with the windmill, the church adds another architectural dimension to Kuželov.
