Litostrov – Local History, Archaeology and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Litostrov
Litostrov brings together local history, archaeological traces and a themed circular cycling route, offering different reasons to stay. The first written mention dates back to 1376; at Kozí hřbet, there is a site dating from the Hallstatt period. The Hornická circular cycling route also passes through the village. If you are looking for a hotel in Litostrov, you can first decide whether your stay will focus mainly on local history or a ride along the Hornická route.
History and Notable Buildings
The first written mention of Litostrov dates back to 1376. After the Thirty Years’ War, only five houses remained in the village. These two facts represent different periods: the medieval first mention, on the one hand, and the number of houses after the war, on the other. They provide two concrete dates for the village’s history.
In the center, the Chapel of St. Florian (“Kaple sv. Floriána”) is a local landmark; it dates from 1853. A new chapel with a simple square ground plan stands in front of house number 11. A stone cross dating from 1910 is located in front of houses numbered 56 and 57. A stone cross dating from 1781 bears an inscription naming Franc Korotvicka and Jiří Fijala as its builders. These details bring together different aspects of history: construction dates and locations, architectural form, and an inscription bearing names.
Kozí hřbet and Prehistory
Three kilometers southeast of the village center, Kozí hřbet lies above the confluence of the Bobrava and Bílá Voda rivers. The Litostrov–Kozí hřbet archaeological site is located there. Remains of a fortified hilltop settlement belonging to the Hallstatt-period Horákov culture, dating from the 7th to 6th century BC, have been preserved; remnants of the fortifications also survive. The site’s position at the confluence and its dating answer different questions: they locate the site in the landscape and place the settlement in a prehistoric period.
Along the Hornická Circular Cycling Route
The themed Hornická circular cycling route passes through Litostrov and runs from the Oslava Valley to Bílý potok. Its course passes through the former Rosice–Oslavany coalfield; the route focuses on mining heritage sites. This gives it a different focus from the local buildings and the archaeological site: on the Hornická, the former coalfield takes center stage. Check the route markings locally before setting out.
Plan Your Stay
Kozí hřbet adds an archaeological perspective to this choice and lies three kilometers southeast of the village center. This lets you decide what you want your stay to focus on before looking for a hotel.
Fields and forests continue to shape Litostrov today. They provide a landscape setting for its historical and archaeological themes, complementing the specific buildings and sites with another perspective on the village.
