Medlice: Village History, Chapel and Ponds
Accommodation in Medlice
Medlice brings together a village history stretching from early documents to archaeological finds and a landscape along the Přeskačský potok stream. Notable features include the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius, a monument in the village square, ponds and traditional customs. This gives you several ways to explore the place as you plan your trip: historical evidence, memorial sites, landscape and traditional customs.
History across the ages
Documents dating from 1273 to 1285 attest to Medlice; LudvĂk of Medlice is named in them. Graves belonging to the ĂšnÄ›tice culture, dating from around the 17th century BCE, have also been found in fields near the road to HornĂ Kounice. Together, these accounts span a vast period: the documents place the written mention in the Middle Ages, while the graves reach far back into prehistoric times. They offer two very different historical reference points, without limiting the village’s history to a single era.
Graves of French soldiers date from 1805 to 1809. Another historical account describes how some French troops travelled from Přeskače through Medlice to Hornà Kounice. Together with the medieval written mention and the older graves, these recorded stories span widely separated periods.
Landmarks and landscape
The Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius is a landmark of Medlice and has undergone extensive reconstruction. A monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars stands in the village square, opposite the municipal office. The chapel links the names of the two saints with the village’s building history; the monument commemorates the victims of two world wars.
Medlice lies in the valley of the Přeskačský potok stream. Two small ponds lie south of the village. A pond in Medlice has also been converted into a natural swimming spot, with the necessary facilities built on its shore. If you plan to swim, check the water quality, access and opening arrangements in advance.
Traditional customs and getting there
Traditional customs include a procession on the Sunday before Easter, during which girls carry a Smrtolka decorated with colourful ribbons through the village. There is also a traditional masked carnival procession through Medlice, followed by an evening celebration. A pilgrimage in honour of Saints Cyril and Methodius is also part of local tradition. The customs take different forms: the Smrtolka procession and the masked carnival are processions, while the pilgrimage has a religious character. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the current dates in advance.
