Morašice: History and Customs
Accommodation in Morašice
Morašice combines archaeological history with places of remembrance and recurring customs. When planning your trip, historical remains can be just as important as dates on the annual calendar. Local points of interest range from a Hallstatt-period burial mound to a memorial and a stone altar, as well as Christmas customs, a church consecration festival, and a pilgrimage. This gives both history enthusiasts and travelers planning for a specific time of year concrete points of interest.
Traces of Different Eras
Near Morašice is a Hallstatt-period burial mound covering a richly furnished grave. It included a wooden burial chamber about 1 meter high and stone enclosure walls up to 1 meter wide. The burial mound, originally 4 to 6 meters high, measured 26 meters in diameter. The comparison of sizes clearly sets the parts apart: the chamber height and wall width are much smaller than the outer mound. Those interested in prehistory can use this as a concrete point of reference for understanding the grave’s structure and the mound’s dimensions.
A memorial to the victims of both world wars was erected and blessed in Morašice in 2014. It represents a different historical reference point from the Hallstatt-period structure: it commemorates the victims of both wars and is a monument dating from 2014. A stone altar in Morašice also bears the coat of arms of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star. It also features the years 1617 and 1902, as well as a reference to a restoration. The memorial and the altar represent different forms of remembrance: a dedication to war victims on the one hand, and a stone feature with the order’s coat of arms, dates, and a restoration reference on the other.
Customs Throughout the Year
Since 2004, the Morašický Betlém has been set up each year in the village square in front of the Morašice cultural center. Since 2006, 50 to 60 residents have gathered there spontaneously and voluntarily every Christmas Eve. They exchange good wishes and sing well-known Christmas carols together. Both customs bring the village square and the Christmas season into focus, but differ in character: one centers on the recurring display of the Betlém, the other on residents spontaneously exchanging greetings and singing together. If you would like to plan your trip around this time, check the current arrangements in advance.
There are seasonal points of interest outside the Christmas period as well. The Svatoannenská pouť in July is part of Morašice’s regular cultural calendar. The Posvícení, Morašice’s church consecration festival, takes place on the second Sunday in October. This distinction is useful when choosing when to travel: the Svatoannenská pouť is held in July, while Posvícení is tied to a specific Sunday in October. If you would like to plan your stay around either event, check the current program or date before traveling.
Pilgrimage and Chapel Path
The Poutní bratrstvo od svaté Anny z Morašic (Pilgrim Brotherhood of Saint Anne of Morašice) connects Morašice with a pilgrimage to Hluboké Mašůvky, 18 km away. Those who complete the walk there with the brotherhood can become members. The distance refers to the pilgrimage destination; becoming a member requires completing the walk with the brotherhood. If you are interested, contact the brotherhood in advance to ask about the current arrangements.
A paved footpath leads from the access road to the Chapel of Matky ustavičné pomoci (Our Lady of Perpetual Help). These are two distinct points to bear in mind: the pilgrimage involves the distance to the destination and the participation requirement, while the chapel is reached by a path from the access road. Check the condition of the paved footpath before your visit.
