Nelepeč-Žernůvka brings together diverse landscape features, sacred architecture and signposted routes. Specific points of interest when choosing this destination include the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, a historicist stone cross, a wooden cross, and routes for hikers and cyclists.

Valley, Stream and Elevation

Žernůvka lies in a narrow valley of the Závistka stream. Nelepeč is below a ridge at the foot of Pasník. This mountain is listed as 544 metres above sea level. Extensive forests stretch around Nelepeč-Žernůvka.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows

The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was consecrated on 19 November 1930. It is an elongated central-plan building with a polygonal ground plan, a shallow apse and a prismatic turret above the western entrance façade. Statues of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary stand on the terrace in front of the chapel.

The chapel and Domov sv. Alžběty in Žernůvka were entrusted to architect Jindřich Vágner and designed on the model of the Basilica of Saint Paul in Rome. Construction of the later Domov sv. Alžběty began in March 1930; the building was initially intended as a convalescent home for Franciscan sisters. Thus, two distinct construction and historical details fall in the same year: the start of construction of Domov in March and the chapel’s consecration in November.

The chapel is open to visitors. Check for current visitor information before your visit.

Stone and Wooden Crosses

The historicist stone cross in Nelepeč-Žernůvka dates from 1868 and is considered a valuable cultural and historical monument. Near the edge of the village there is also a wooden cross with a naively rendered silhouette of Christ painted on sheet metal. It is considered a notable folk-art monument. The stone cross can be identified by its date and historicist style, and the wooden cross by its location, material and painted figure.

Hiking and Cycling

The Žernůvka–Úsuší route starts in Žernůvka, passes through Nelepeč and is 8.4 kilometres long. It is suitable for hikers and cyclists and runs around Pasník and Loučský vrch along a green-marked hiking trail.

Another option is the challenging mountain biking route Deblín–Úsuší–Nelepeč–Žernůvka. It passes through small villages and runs along the Loučka and the Závistka stream. This gives you a choice of different types of route: an 8.4-kilometre route for hikers and cyclists, and a challenging mountain biking route. Route conditions may change seasonally; check them before setting out.
