Ochoz u Brna lies in the southernmost part of the Moravian Karst Protected Landscape Area. The Údolí Říčky educational trail, caves with archaeological finds and the Church of St. Václav offer different focuses for a trip—from hiking and nature to local history.

Hiking in the Říčky Valley

The Údolí Říčky educational trail is an easy 3 km hiking route. It has eight stops, and ten information boards along the trail cover geology, archaeology and the surrounding natural environment. The watercourse also shapes the route: its water alternately disappears below the surface and reappears. The educational trail therefore introduces you to different aspects of the landscape, from geological features to nature along the water.

The Říčky Nature Park is ideal for longer cycling trips and walks through picturesque scenery, including meadows beside the meandering Říčka stream and the steep slopes of wooded hills. While the educational trail is laid out with stops and information boards, the nature park offers walks and cycling routes through its scenic landscape.

Caves and archaeological finds

The Ochozská jeskyně dripstone cave is the largest cave in the Říčky Valley. From Ochoz, Pekárna Cave can be reached via a blue-marked hiking trail along a forest path beside the stream, a distance of about 2 km. Švédův stůl Cave lies in the Říčky Valley near the blue-marked trail towards Pekárna and about 1.5 km from Ochoz.

The lower jaw of a Neanderthal, also known as the “Ochozská čelist,” was found in Švédův stůl Cave. An engraved limestone block depicting a horse, dating back about 15,000 years, was also discovered there—an exceptional example of Magdalenian art. In the wider area around Ochoz u Brna, rare Stone Age artefacts from the earlier Stone Age were found in Pekárna Cave; they are represented in the archaeological collections of the Muzeum Brněnska.

Church of St. Václav and local events

The late Renaissance Church of St. Václav was built in 1606 on the site of a chapel dating from around 1250. Following repairs in 1658–1659 in the aftermath of the Thirty Years’ War, the church was extended between 1740 and 1750. Its building history thus encompasses the earlier chapel, the church built in 1606 and a later extension.
