In Ostrovánky, historic chapels and memorial sites meet a contemporary menhir circle. The village also has time-honoured traditions and a landscape that stretches from a gently undulating hollow to hills overlooking Moravian Slovakia. If you are looking for a hotel for a culture-focused trip, the village offers a range of themes: a more recent stone monument, religious buildings, memorial sites and living traditions.

Menhirs and Chapels in Historical Context

Stonehenge Ostrovánky was completed in 2025. The site consists of 16 sandstone menhirs from Dubenec near Jaroměř, arranged in a circle. It has a diameter of 24 metres. The stone monument’s material, origin and form make it a clearly defined destination for visitors interested in culture. Completed in 2025, it adds a more recent feature alongside the village’s historic buildings and memorial sites.

The Stonehenge Ostrovánky site is freely accessible without restrictions. Please check access conditions before your visit.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is the oldest building in Ostrovánky and dates from 1882. It was built by the Sadílek couple, who were from the village; in 2004, it was declared a cultural monument. The Chapel of St Wenceslas tells a different building story: it was built as a small church in 1929 and consecrated in 1931. Inside is a painting of St Wenceslas by Jano Köhler. In this case, two years passed between construction and consecration.

Memorial Sites and Local History

The 650-metre-long Alej vzpomínek (Alley of Memories) was established in 2017 as a memorial avenue for deceased family members. Its trees belong to 161 families from the area around Bukovany and commemorate the stories of their ancestors. The avenue is on the road between Bukovanský mlýn and Ostrovánky. Its length, year of establishment and dedication each give this memorial site a distinct connection to the surrounding area.

The Štěpán Novák Memorial stands at the edge of the village in the direction of Bukovany. Its inscription records that Štěpán Novák was born in Ostrovánky on 20 November 1898 and fell on the Italian front on 9 September 1917. The memorial thus connects the remembrance of one person with his birthplace and the later events of the war.

Ostrovánky is first mentioned in written sources in 1141. This early reference provides a historical context for the more recent, precisely dated buildings and memorial sites. Together, they take visitors through different chapters of the village’s history: from its first written mention to the chapels and the memorial sites of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Traditions and Landscape

Ostrovánky’s traditional costume belongs to the northern area of Hanácko-slovácká. Maypole raising is accompanied by gatherings of men’s and women’s choirs from the surrounding area, as well as cymbal music. The traditional-costume St Wenceslas fair is another local tradition. Traditional dress, music and communal customs add another dimension to the village’s cultural life, alongside its buildings and memorial history.

Ostrovánky lies in a gently undulating hollow on both sides of the road between Kyjov and Ždánice. The hills above the village offer views across Moravian Slovakia. The Sobůlský potok rises at the upper end of the village and flows into the Kyjovka below Kyjov. The hollow’s position, the hilltop views and the stream each shape a different aspect of the surrounding landscape.

The Kyjovská wine trail also offers a specific geographical reference: it runs from Bukovany through Ostrovánky to Nechvalín. This gives your trip a cultural focus as well as a named route through a landscape that can be described in terms of its road, stream and ridgelines.
