Discover Podbřežice: Church, Monuments and Geotope
Accommodation in Podbřežice
Podbřežice combines historical landmarks with a geotourism destination south of the village. For travelers looking for a hotel in Podbřežice, the church, monuments and the Mechovkový útes geotope offer different starting points for planning a trip. The historic sites date from different centuries and each tells its own story. You can therefore weigh whether the cultural history of the village or the geotourism perspective is the main focus of your stay.
The Church and Historical Traces
The neo-Gothic Church of St. Peter and Paul was consecrated on June 14, 1907. The church houses a bell cast by Zachariáš Milner in Olomouc in 1603. It was made more than three centuries before the church’s consecration, bringing together an older individual artifact and a later date in the church’s history. The tombstone of the painter Ondřej also dates from an earlier period: it was made in 1599. It was moved from the original church to the cemetery; today it is in the Church of St. Peter and Paul. The bell and tombstone offer different historical reference points: the bell’s founder, place of manufacture and year are known, while the tombstone also has a history of changing locations.
Cross and Monuments in the Village
The cast-iron cross in Podbřežice was made in 1834 at the Blansko ironworks. It stands at the former crossroads of the road to Komořany. Its location is part of its history, alongside two dated milestones: its manufacture in 1834 and its restoration in 2012 under the supervision of the Brno office of the National Heritage Institute. On the village square, a war memorial stands in the park in front of the church: “Pomník Obětem 1. a 2. světové války.” Its name refers to the victims of the First and Second World Wars, giving the memorial a different historical context from the cross. The parish acquired a cast-iron statue of St. John of Nepomuk in 1885. Together, these objects represent different forms of commemoration and local history: a cross with dates of manufacture and restoration, a war memorial, and a statue with a documented year of acquisition.
Geotope and Cycle Route Section
The Mechovkový útes geotope lies 1.5 km south of Podbřežice. It is part of the small protected area of Stepní stráně u Komořan and is a geotourism attraction as well as an excursion site. This adds a different thematic focus to the historic sites: the geotope’s geotourism classification and its inclusion in the protected area take center stage. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the monuments in the village and the geological destination to the south. A 900 m section of cycle route between Komořany and Podbřežice is listed for 2024. It adds a named cycle route connection between the two villages to the options, alongside the cultural-historical and geotourism perspectives.
